Fedor Gorst and the Viking Sponsorship

Not just you. Carom cues seem to have more of it for some reason. Look at Longoni’s signature cues. Feijens pool cue by them may have it too. I have a Schuler Richard Bitalis model. Same idea. I never forked over the money for a Longoni but kind of wondered about spending a fair amount with a pro player’s name prominently displayed on it. I guess it didn’t bother me to the point of not buying the Schuler, but it bothers me a little and isn’t my favorite thing. I sort of don’t get why people like it.

It also seems different to me on baseball bats, I don’t know why it doesn’t bother me on a wood bat but does on a cue. Maybe the old Joe Morgan model I had as a kid. Golf clubs seemed to have player’s names on lower end stuff back in the day. With some notable exceptions. Like Tommy Armour Silver Scott and a few others. Hogan doesn’t count because he started his own company. And like the old story goes when Gary Player called Hogan at an odd hour for swing advice and Hogan asked what clubs he played. Player said Dunlop. Hogan said call Mr. Dunlop.😜

Anyway, there is a difference between the maker’s signature and a pro’s.
Something about a ball players signature on a bat, it’s nostalgic. Cues, just marketing, nothing to attach to, imho

I don't like the size and prominence of SVB's signature on his cue. I wouldn't like a cue maker's signature, either, but they tend to be small and unobtrusive.
He could have a discrete SVB somewhere and it would be infinitely more palatable
That said, I don't like prominent brand marks on anything I use or wear. Sometimes you can get around it (clothes), sometimes you can't (tools).
brand loyalty is sometimes more of a hostage scenario haha
Heck, you'll never even find me wearing a shirt of my favorite Boston sports team.
I think we are very similar attitude toward branding. There's just something about having a huge name on things that feels very restrictive to me. I have been a skateboarder for 15+ years now, and that's different again. I have no issue supporting my friends company (But then maybe that is the boards I get for free and the proximity he has to me and my desire to support him...)

Interesting thoughts, thanks for sharing. I love the anecdote at the end.

Wish I could remember the comedian who said this:

"I saw a girl in the mall with "Guess" printed on her sweatshirt. So I said; "Implants?".

Sounds like somethung Mitch Hedberg would have said. Sadly he passed, hilarious guy. RIP

Holy crap.. really... Does he know how much money he is leaving on the table not using a Szamboti, a Searing, a Southwest or many of the other high end custom cuemakers, these are the best playing cues on the planet. Doesn't he read these threads? Someone needs to tell him right away about all the money he is losing not using a super cue. I mean look at everyone who buys these and become an instant world champion... wait? That hasn't happened? But I read all the threads... these are the greatest best player ever... WTF... I am in disbelief... who would have thought...

People need to get over this best cue thing. It’s a stick that hits a ball. Guy on my 8-ball team owns only cues from Temu or Amazon and wins racks all day long. You think Efren would be worse if you chaneed his cue? Doubtful

well maybe your friend is just a naturally better player. A guy in our apa league who’s fairly new to playing was using a temu cue until I pointed out it had a snooker shaft. The tip was tiny as hell lol I explained how much harder he was making the game and lo and behold when he changed to a normal playing cue it was better.
Btw don’t compare what you use to efren lol he’s got a natural ability you’ll never have . as I’ve said before pro golfers don’t use cavity back clubs but if the average golfer used forged irons like they did they wouldn’t be able to hit the ball 😂 comparing yourself to a god tier player is going to set you up for a lot of disappointment 😂

Actually, a bunch of pro golfers have started to use cavity back irons. Especially 4, 5, and 6 irons...

actually that's not true, the club deal. far more pros(close to 70%) use some type of cavity-back than pure blades. For the last 10yrs or so Titleist's No.1 irons on all pro tours has been the t100/150 series. Sure, blades still have their following but its getting smaller every year. Modern CB's pros use perform/feel like a blade but don't rob you of distance on a less than perfect strike. IMO the cue in pool has far less importance than the clubs in golf. Because of the differences in fit, swing speeds, overall ability there's no way a weekend player could use pros stuff. In pool a hack could easily use a pro's cue. Won't play as well but it will on him/her and not the cue. Can't say that in golf.

There’s nothing natural about playing multiple different billiards games in rough conditions from a ping she. Natural feel = Practice X Time. This “natural” thing is a way to shift burden of responsibility away from ourselves for not putting in the same effort.
