I just inherited an original McDermott MR(5), and was wondering if there is any interest out there on it. I just sent it to a local cue maker / cue shop to get refinished. McDermott changes pieces on these old cues, so thats why I am not sending it to them. Thanks for any inquiries.

Bump....

Just looking for information. Any help as to how rare they are, or if anyone has sold one. Also looking for comments about McDermott Changing the butt plate and joint material to their new materials when refinishing. Wouldnt it be better to keep the cue original? Thanks.

Change?

I'm 99% sure they change nothing unless you ask them to. Give them a call and ask for Jayme. He will tell you exactly whats up. Let me know what you want for the cue as is. You can also send pic's to rodcar50@hotmail.com

True...

McD will not change anything UNLESS you tell them to. If they find something wrong with the cue, they will contact YOU before they do any work on it. They are really good about keeping older cues original.

I have an MR-5(a) series cue. I paid 300 for it about a year ago. Now, its probably worth 150.. lol..

I spoke to mcdermott about a week ago, and they said they have to change everything white (butt cap and joint piece) because their new finish doesnt stick to it. They wanted to charge an extra 50 bucks for it. The place that I brought it too has alot of older mcdermott parts, and they even had the original nylon, which mcdermott didnt. After refinishing the cue and the shaft I have about 350 into it. I am told it will look brand new once finished. Do you guys think its worth keeping the old parts on it? I seem to think its better to keep it original. Thanks again for previous and future input.

That choice is mostly personal preference. If you plan to keep it, do you mind if it is not 'minty fresh'? In todays market, I don't how how easily you could turn it around with hopes of much if any profit after putting $350 into it being refinished. However two of the most knowledgable McDermott collectors have already posted on this thread, and they know the McDermott market. (Phinmole and Rodcar)

Personally I have about 7 older Mcdermotts, mostly D series. One i have had re-finished, but I had the butt plate and joint collar replaced anyway as the collar was cracked and the plate was engraved. I have heard that the new finish they have won't stick to older butt plates, but i havent personally confirmed it with Jayme Cernika (CS manager).

Unless the cue is heavily damaged, I look at a cues bumps, scrapes and nicks as character. Each one probobly has a story.
