in my short expierence with custom cues i have noticed that shorter ferrells translate into a stiffer hit. this is obvious when looking at 3 cushion designs due to the fact that these cues have a much stiffer taper.

if i purchased a cue with with two shafts and they had the exact same taper and different ferrell lengths, would the shaft with the shorter ferrell produce a stiffer hit?

Doubt it.
The one which is fatter in the 10-16" area from the tip would be.

a short ferrule doesn't produce a "stiffer" hit,,,it produces a HARDER FEELING hit. stiffness is in the shaftwood and taper.

what you think is "stiff" is actually "hard" because there is less ferrule material cushioning the blow between the cb and the cue shaftwood...you simply FEEL the hit more = FEELS harder. most ferrules have an .x" cap that covers the tenon. if you cut that cap to expose the tenon(also called "tenon through"), which is a core extension of the shaftwood, then that tenon is exposed just under the leather tip,,,it has no padding, and the hit of the cue will feel even more hard. BUT IT IS NOT STIFF.

The typical Pool cue ferrule is 1 inch
Carom cues about half that, or less.

As noted before, I doubt you could tell which was stiffer.

Even if the profiles of the two shafts are identical,
it is possible one will be more stiff than the other
due to variations in the wood.

IMHO - the short vs long ferrule thing is more an issue of style.

I agree mostly with pdcue. Unless you are talking about an inch and a quarter ferrule. They have more chance of deflection , although almost unoticable , but there in my opinion. Also depends if they are threaded ferrules versus non threaded ferrules. Now there is a whole other thread there.
