I was just curious, I made myself a break cue with phenolic for the ferrule and tip. Instead of treading the phenolic over a tenon, I drilled a 1.5" hole in the shaft and threaded a piece of phenolic into it, and with the remaining 3/4" of phenolic I attached my tip and was done with it. I know this is nothing new just wondering if anyone does this and if you think it might be stronger or weaker than the conventional way of doing it. Just curious about your input. Thanks in advance.

I had a j/b made like this before, at least this is the way the builder described to me how he built it and why it broke and jumped so well. <<ED

I've put ivory ferrules on predator shafts like this. 1.5" ferrule 3/4 in tennon into the shaft. None have failed so far. None are being used under the stress of a break tho either.
I can see the shaft wood around that tenon splitting if any sideways pressure is applied to the ferrule on the break.
I would imagine a threaded ferrule on a tennon would be more sturdy but that's jmo.

I believe it was the late Edwin Reyes that did a huge amount of testing with the ferrule having a tenon inserted into the shaft. His findings were that the shaft split more often than not & it was a poor design. If you search his posts maybe you can find the info as I remember it being discussed quite a bit.
I guess it does'nt matter for a break shaft, but i don't think playing shafts have as good of a hit, or feel to them, after having the tenon replaced this way. I like my tenons cut right onto the end of the shaft. Also, alot of people, myself included, almost bend a cue in half on the break shot:grin:

Yea. I don't like it. I've done 4-5 predators only like that. I have also added tenons to predators and ivory ferrules threaded.
In cue making thing you did yesterday you might not do today or tomorrow.
I don't even bother with that stuff anymore and if someone asked me to build a new shaft with the ferrule into the shaft I'd probably say no.
