Ferrule For Break Shaft

what do you guys recommend for a ferrule for the break shaft that Jacoby is making for me. is there such a thing as a steel ferrule? or a phenolic ferrule? seems like i have seen something along these lines lately.

also, i do not want a hard tip on this shaft, that makes it hard for me to control the cue ball. i prefer a medium, no more than medium hard.

what do you posters out there have on your break cue/shaft(s)?

Question ..

DCP ... Is it a Break cue or Break/Jump cue? I am sure that
Jacoby's recommendation would be a good one, that's their
business. They would probably explain the pro's and con's of
each type.

At the risk of releasing the Kraken

Here goes (knees shaking) I have a predator BK. I really like it. I always thought break cues were BS until I got this. It hits harder and the balls spread much better than my regular cue. The butt is a bit skinner and it a bit lighter (19 oz) I’m not sure what the ferrule tip combo is whatever was stock.

I think I just heard someone in the background say “go ahead punk …make my day”

Actually there are a lot of players that use a Predator break cue or shaft on their break cue...

The stiff shaft and low deflection when breaking is a good combo...(more control)

You won't get flamed until you say you play every shot with a Predator...(thats when you would need to duck) :D :D :D

I have been told that tip ferrule combo on a Predator BK and a regular Predator 314 shaft are quite different...I don't know if there is any truth to it, but thats what I was told by a gentleman that had a Predator BK.

For me, I like a short black ferrule with a hard leather tip. The black lets me pick it up on the cueball easier. I prefer leather for the control reasons, but hard leather cause I don't want it to lose it's shape as much from breaking.

This is a correct statement...a Predator BK cue is a pretty good weapon. It's only when you become sissified and have to use one on your regular cue that causes the problems, especially when you turn into one of the preaching lemmings bellowing out praise through a bullhorn about zero deflection from a parade float! :p :D

Are you using the reflection of the tip on the CB to line up? .....and of so, does it help that much that it's worth changing??

I guess what I mean is that I am stroking so fast when I hit the cueball that I like having a black ferrule/tip out there so that I can tell easier where I am striking the cueball. I catch the tip hitting the cueball out of the corner of my eye and I can place the spot better on the ball where I am striking it.

This make sense? It may not to some...but I know it helps me.

I use this: It's a Predator SPJU and a 314 shaft modified by Proficient Billiards. I still haven't had the jump joint put in.

i have always been a proponent of hard stiff cues for breaking, but i think these phenolic ferrules are overdoing it. a hard tip like a compreme or hard water buffalo will do what you want. pay more attention to the shaft stiffness and joint(metal joint is the best). get shaftwood that has dark grain. they pack a wallop.

beyong that, a typical fiber ferrule used for house cues is good enough and is very very sturdy material. or use aegis if you must

now,,,with a hard hitting cue, you don't need cue speed like in the old days. back then everyone was using their playing cue or really bad break cues, and that's why thay had to rely on cue speed. with a hard hitting stiff cue, all you need is weight(20oz). you will deliver a heavy cb at 3/4 speed, AND control the cb.

Any good quality Ferrule should do the job just fine. But if your leary about some of the Ferrules, just get a Phenolic ferrule that is used on a cue. I have another Espiritu that i used just for breaking and it works just fine.

I tried a 314 shaft on my Espiritu just because of all the hype. I haven't shot with another shaft since.

Are you a golfer also? If so do you still play with persimmon woods? How about tennis? Still use a wood racket strung with catgut? Baseball/softball maybe...are you one of those sissified leather glove wearers or do you still do it barehanded like real men did in the 1870's?

Does it look like I'm anti new technology if I'm suggesting the Universal shaft or an I.C.E.?

I aint in to all that deflection bullshit. I just like the way it plays. I use the 314 on my Schon now and it hits very well.
Anyway this thread is DCP's question about break ferrules. I apologize for getting off topic.

DO not use a steel ferrule! I bought a Cuetech jump break about four years ago that had a steel ferrule on it from the factory. It was supposed to be the top of the line j/b at the time, or at least that is what I was told. After ONE week of breaking, the ferrule mushroomed out!! One week! I sent it back to Cuetech through the dealer where I purchased it, and they replaced it after three weeks of argument. Guess what? After about two weeks, the new one did the same thing! Cuetech never replaced this one.......They said that I was doing something to cause it to malfunction, but the only thing that they could think of was that I was hitting them too hard. I had my speed checked through the chrono, and I was only breaking at about 25 mph. IMHO, that is not "too hard"
After all this argument with cuetech, I have never and will never buy or play with another cuetech. By the way, I took the cue to a great cue guy, and he replaced the ferrule for me at a very minimal cost. Then, I immediately sold the cue to the first person that made me a decent offer.
