Ferrule - A ring or cap put on a slender shaft to strenthen it or prevent splitting.

Cuemakers,
What are the charecteristics of (During Play), and why do you prefer them?

1) Soft vs. Hard Ferrules? (Like Elforlyn vs. Ivorine 4)

2) Ferrule Length, some 1 1/8" vs. 3/4" ? (like "Housecues")

3) Is there a " Rule of Thumb " ? ( Like the shorter the ferrule, the harder you want the material? )

Thanks for your input...

Softer ferrules usually produce more cue ball action and shoot the cue ball with less squirt off.

2) Ferrule Length, some 1 1/8" vs. 3/4" ? (like "Housecues")
The longer the ferrule the more of that ferrule's characteristics come through. Long softer ferrules give more action and longer harder ferrules cause more cue ball squirt and hit harder than shorter ones of the same material.

3) Is there a " Rule of Thumb " ? ( Like the shorter the ferrule, the harder you want the material? )
There is no real rule of thumb here, other than discussed in question #2.
The hardness or softness is personal taste and length can magnify those characteristics.

I have ordered a cue based on the "hit" and overall performance of the cue I demo'd. These aspects were based on the following g configuration; Terminator -3 shaft / MOORIIII soft tip (12.75 mm ) and a Saber T ferrule.
Can anyone here give me their opinion of the Saber T as far as hit, deflection and other characteristics go? In order to maintain the same hit? The way it seems to me is that the. T-3 SHAFT / taper along with the somewhat harder ferrule is offset by the MOORIIII soft tip to give me the reason I liked this combo so much. It seems like a good combo of a firm hit and.CB control that I liked so much in the cue I demo'd.
As an aside, I have never had a cue with. SABER T on it before...sticking with lbf based ferrules.
I have also heard that the Saber T is robust enough to withstand everyday play and that it is pretty chalk resistent.
I relaize that EVERYONE has Their favorites....ivory, Kumar, micarta melomine.
I would appreciate if We could narrow it down between the Saber T and melomine.
Thanks, KII

I would say Saber-t gives a hard hit with a good amount of deflection. I have one on my cue, and chalk doesn't seem to stick to it.

i feel that this like many others aspects to a cue are personal preference but i prefer melomine over Saber T.

i had some stock of saber T and didnt care for it much.

and the same applies to long short hard soft ferrules as well all personal preference i prefer a hard thin wall 1 inch ferrule thats sleeved instead of threaded on my personal player. my new cue has a thin wall ferrule made from a cue ball doesnt get more chaulk resistant than that.
