Ferrule Length?

The cost of my ferrule material has more than doubled over the last 5-8 years. Ironically, that's about when the "idea" that shorter ferrules equate to less deflection. If I wanted to keep my ferrule cost low, I could always make them half as long, then tell everybody that it makes the cue deflect less, when in reality it only causes my wallet to deflect less. The physics of deflection & tip end mass are solid, but the difference in tip end mass between a 1" ferrule & a 1/2" ferrule of the same material, is going to be a very tough argument to make. Is there a weight difference? Perhaps it's possible. Is it enough of a decrease in weight to reduce deflection in any noticeable, meaningful way? Hell no. But by golly it it costs me a lot less. Best part for me is that now that I have put a positive spin on my thriftiness, I can now charge even more for the shaft because it's now a LD shaft!

Don't get me wrong, I am not dismissing the differences between low deflection shafts & normal shafts. Guys like OB truly apply the science. But for other builders who simply install a short ferrule & call the shaft LD, all they're doing is cutting their ferrule cost, IMO. There's a whole lot more to LD than ferrule length. I'd argue that ferrule length actually is a negligible factor. Just my $.02
