Not trying to be silly but it is gonna play like the wood does. A bounce on the end against the shop floor is a good way to judge how a shaft blank will play before it is turned. Adding a hard ferrule adds a little noise but doesn't change the way the shaft plays much ignoring mass and deflection issues. A soft ferrule actually changes how the shaft plays working as an extra shock absorber behind the tip.

I think you need at least a pad behind the tip using a laminated shaft. I'm tempted to put the pad and a very short ferrule, maybe a quarter inch, on a laminated shaft.

Ferruleless shaft

All you will ever need is a pad on the end of a shaft. Ferrules are ornaments only which isn't bad if you want ornaments.

not correct with today's ferrules and laminated shafts

On a nonlaminated shaft I would agree, a pad should work as well as a ferrule. However, with today's ferrule materials and the tendency of laminated shafts to split a ferrule can prevent a split from ever starting giving support all of the way around the shaft the same as rings are sometimes used in a butt. A pad simply doesn't offer this support.

Many years ago I had a nice straight house cue that I liked. The ferrule cracked all the way through, so I removed it. I had no tools (or another ferrule) for replacing it, so I tried putting a laminated Champion tip directly on the shaft, with no ferrule. I cut the dowel off and flattened out the top of the shaft. Then I put the tip on, making sure it was a good fit. No problem so far. But then I played with the cue. It felt like I was hitting the cue ball with a hammer! I had no feel and using english on the cue ball was very difficult to control. That was my one and only experiment playing with a ferrule-less cue. Maybe it would be different today. I don't know.

Lots of people are "experimenting" with ferrule-less shafts - meaning what you get may or may not be any good.
If you want to try one that is definitely past all that & represents a top quality end result, contact hangemhigh & get yourself a Ca$h cues ferrule-less shaft. Do a search & see what's been said.
