Newby here with a cue companion...all new tips and blades but my issue is scratching the ferrule when I trim it...I ,am only testing now but I have no clue how fast, slow, motor speed etc I should be at.?thanks for any advice

I mean the 3 sided bit that goes in the holder....they are new and sharp. Also have a carbide cutter. My issue is I'm getting lines or scratches when I trim the ferrule

Do you mean you have problems with scratching the ferrule when installing and trimming down tips??

All I am doing is installing ferrules on old shafts to learn. I am not installing tips yet. When I trim the ferrule with my carbide blade that is on the wheel, not by hand, scratches show up on the ferrule from the blade. As I said I am new and do not know the proper speed to trim down a ferrule on the lathe. I have a cue companion with the reversible motor and I am not sure of the speed of the motor.

On the wheel?
A picture would really help.
Maybe you take too deep cuts?
Maybe you spin the lathe in reverse?
Maybe your carbide tool is dull?

What type of carbide "blade" are you using? Maybe it has the wrong shape?
The ones I use look similar to this: http://www.cut-tools.de/toolholder-svjbr-vbmt-vbgt-inserts-p-255.html

Some speculate than you spin the lathe too fast, I would tend to think that you spin too slow and feed too fast.

Once you turn down the diameter, you will need to polish the ferrule. Anytime you turn something on the lathe it will leave machine marks. I start with 1200 and finish with 2000 grit to polish.

I google image searched for a cue companion. Take a close up picture of your set-up with the tool near the part.
