ferrule replacement

When a tip is replaced and a lathe is used, the ferrule is faced off right? This actually take a small amount of the ferrule off, so is it time to replace the ferrule when the tenon is exposed?

Probably not. Is the tenon flat and flush with the ferrule top? Many ferrules are actually designed that way as the tenon goes completely through to the back of the tip. Now if you have a capped ferrule and you've had so much taken off...then you'll most likely come into a hollow spot before actually seeing the tenon. So...is the tenon flush...or do you see the tenon down in a hole?

I would be refering to a capped ferrule.

I just had my wife's Players cue tip replaced and i noticed that when it was faced off that the tenon was exposed. I didnt know if with capped ferrules if it would weaken the ferrule by not having the cap on it.

Depending on the age of the cue. Most Players cues I have seen have a straight through ferrule.

i do know of the ferrules that dont have a cap.

Even with the uncapped ferrules/tenon all the way thru the ferrule eventually you would need to replace the ferrule right?

How far can you let a ferrule go before you would need to replace it?

Example - if i have an uncapped linen based ferrule that starts out at 1" long can it go to 3/4" with out weakening the ferrule?

Mcdermott is the largest Qmaker in the United States & Meucci is 2nd & Schmelke is 3rd & most of the Qs they make, have a through & through ferrule. Plus, nearly all of the imports, have this type of ferrule. I would say that only a small percentage of Qs, are made with capped ferrules. Furthermore to face off 1/4 of an inch, from the end of the ferrule, would have to be dozens of tip jobs...JER
