Fiber backing

it is there to protect the ferrule from chipping or splitting. used most of the time on ivory ferrules.

Some say yes it changes it, some say no. Probably depends on the exact tip and ferrule, exact backing, and player.

What is the use of the fiber backing on the shaft of the cue, Does it help in cutting down defelection.

In my opinion it is a waste of time and material. It serves no purpose whatsoever and is unnecessary.

Good cuemaking,

If you use a soft tip, or let your tip get very thin, a pad can protect your ferrule.
Or if you don't use a ferrule, the pad can protect your shaft. :D

Pool 1027,

Actually, the OB-1 uses a Carbon Fiber Disc under the tip, not the normal vulcanized fiber pad that most people are familiar with.

The Carbon Disc is there to unitize the end of our cueshaft. It is an integral part of the construction, and must stay in place for the longevity of the cueshaft.

As far a cueball deflection goes, it has no real impact on it. The specific gravity of the disc is very similar to that of the tip, so it doesn't really change the mass of the tip end of the cueshaft. Tip end mass is the primary factor in cueball deflection.

Thank you for the information Royce. I got to see one of your shafts close up the other day. One of my friends Ryan Morris bought from you recently. He seems very happy with the way it plays. When you say unitize the end what do you mean by that.

pool1027,

What I mean by unitize is to tie everything together. At the end of our shaft we have 3 different materials coming together and the carbon disc ties them all together for a unitized strength. As a matter of fact, I use one for my break cue and I have others out in the Dallas area being tested right now. The OB-1 seems to be very well suited for the break shot because with the very low deflection you get it is much easier to contact the rack square. If the tests go well, we may offer them for break cues.
