Approximately ten years ago, I found a 2x2 Porper case with a Viking cue and a cheap Chinese cue in it. I gave it to the owner of the pub and told him someone had left it and would he please put it away until the guy came back for it.
Last night just before APA league play commenced, the owner gave me the case with the cues. He said he'd had it stored in his office for all those years and since it was never claimed he was giving it to me.
The Viking cue is still in very good condition and the shaft is dead straight.
One of my team mates needs a cue (he's been using another Viking I own). I am going to give him the Viking that was given to me after I adjust the weight to 19 oz, clean the shaft, and put a new tip on it. I'm gonna put a Samsara break tip on the cheap cue and he will use it for breaking.
After a decade of waiting for someone to claim the cues and case, and no one coming forward for it, I feel it was OK for the pub owner to dispense with them as he saw fit.
But I also feel that it is never OK to glom a cue just because it was left behind. The only right thing is to turn it in to the room manager / owner or to the bar staff. After a decent waiting period (say.. one year), if no one claims it, then and only then, should it be given away, sold or traded. Anything else is theft.
