Finders Keepers...Losers Weepers

Approximately ten years ago, I found a 2x2 Porper case with a Viking cue and a cheap Chinese cue in it. I gave it to the owner of the pub and told him someone had left it and would he please put it away until the guy came back for it.

Last night just before APA league play commenced, the owner gave me the case with the cues. He said he'd had it stored in his office for all those years and since it was never claimed he was giving it to me.

The Viking cue is still in very good condition and the shaft is dead straight.

One of my team mates needs a cue (he's been using another Viking I own). I am going to give him the Viking that was given to me after I adjust the weight to 19 oz, clean the shaft, and put a new tip on it. I'm gonna put a Samsara break tip on the cheap cue and he will use it for breaking.

After a decade of waiting for someone to claim the cues and case, and no one coming forward for it, I feel it was OK for the pub owner to dispense with them as he saw fit.

But I also feel that it is never OK to glom a cue just because it was left behind. The only right thing is to turn it in to the room manager / owner or to the bar staff. After a decent waiting period (say.. one year), if no one claims it, then and only then, should it be given away, sold or traded. Anything else is theft.

Just my .02!

+2 (after justadub). When I see threads like this started, in order to stop shaking my head I have to keep reminding myself that AZBilliards is read by folks from all walks of life.

"folks from all walks of life".... and it appears crawls and slithers of life also.

dom_poppa is history, so that should be the end of the story. Most people are honest, sadly the DISHONEST ONE Sell Newspaper, or make for good TV NEWS. We only here good News on slow NEWS DAYS!

I have a White and Brown Justis from 1995 and everyone in town knows my case and cues so I figured it was always safe. I loaned my whole kit to a friend for a few weeks when I was nursing a busted wrist and I got no less than 3 calls from people wondering who this guy was at different places around town with my stuff. Most players around here know it immediately and are smart enough to know better even if you can't trust them all...

The problem comes from the non "players" that don't have a real clue as to the attachment we develop to our equipment.

I used to leave my case locked in the office of the Bailey's here in town when I was off the road. I didn't like keeping it in the car and would be back each night anyway so I thought this was completely safe....

One afternoon I come wandering in and have one of the managers get my cue since only they have keys to the office.... To my complete shock the manager comes out and tells me my cue is no longer there.... I totally freak and head out to every pawn shop in town with pictures and phone at least 30 people to tell them to be on the lookout.....

After 3-4 hours of driving around I head back to the scene of the crime and a different manager is there... Neither he nor the manager from earlier had been working the night before.....

I explained to him what happened and he asked me what time I had left and I told him they had locked up behind me.... He thinks for a minute and says they couldn't have left with it last night then because someone has to unlock and lock the doors after closing as each employee leaves so it would have been hard to hide the case as they were leaving and the manager stays in the office the whole time doing count downs anyway....

At this point we begin to search the whole place... In a small closet in the back where they store chairs and furnishings we find my case.... Stuck way back in the back for later retrieval....

I was completely relieved and exhausted.... It wasn't until later that I realized that it had to have been the closing manager who had been up to no good.... No one else would have had the opportunity in the time frame allowed to have pulled it off......

Sad to say that was just the first glimpse of true character I got to see from this guy.... Sooner or later Karma will get him fired and I might go back...

Just remember that not all the bad guys wear black hats out here in the real world. Shoot first and ask questions later........
