Finding a match at the pool hall

I have only been to the place on week days, from about 6pm to 10pm. I want to go they during the day one time and see what it's like in there. I hope to be able to go there during the day this weekend.

I was, of course, being facetious, But you know, "the journey of a thousand miles..." and all that: ASK!! -- you'll get some pointers. And after awhile you'll learn which guys know what they're talking about and which don't.

Free knowledge. You just have to ask.

I was agreeing that i know i am at least a thousand hours away. It's all good, I know i am not that good of a player. I hope to play for the next 50 or 60 years though.

Couple of terminology things:

Wanna play sum? = gambling
Play sum? = gambling

Wanna hit sum? = practice
Hit sum? = practice

Slight differences, but worth knowing.

In the day time you are more likely to find the retired guys. Sometimes you can find one that knows the game very well, but maybe can't execute as well as he could. These are good guys to learn from, and will usually be more willing to play for free or very cheap (5 dollar sets, etc).

Another good way to get to know the players is to sign up for the weekly $5 entry 9 ball handicapped tournament. Most rooms have them. You will quickly see a broader range of players, especially on the higher skilled level, in a pool room with 9 footers, than on the apa/tap bar leagues.

Good luck.

Would playing a few matches of 9 ball every now and than help my 8 ball game. I plan to start playing on a 9 ball league either next session or the session after also.

Nothing wrong with cross training. But, IMO, if you want to improve your 8ball game, play some 14.1.

it'll also help
the udders

Yea, the PLAY and HIT is a nice thing to know.

I am good for $5 sets.

There is one pool hall that has a 8 ball tournament on tuesdays at 7:30pm not sure off the table size, thinking either 7ft or 8 ft, and one pool hall that has free 9 ball tournaments on tuesdays at 8:00pm with about 60 players, that i think is played on their 9 ft tables.

That would be called "paying for lessons."

If you're astute, you can pick up a lot by just playing/watching almost anyone who is better than you, but have you have to watch *real* close. Udderwise, you can look for the guy in the room that impresses you most and offer him $20-$50 to play for a few hours and will answer all your questions. The better players are usually happy to help.

Lou Figueroa
mostly because they know
you are a million hours of play
from becoming a threat
from whatever they show you :-)

Lou, not a bad idea. I think I may do this. Now I gotta find a top level player in my neck of the woods.

I am not a great player, but every once in a while another guy in the pool room will ask me something very basic like, "What am I doing wrong?" or "Why do I constantly miss this particular shot?" and I am always happy to help out. I like to think that most guys are like that.

I like to think that too:thumbup:!
and if I'm that far below them that I need to ask, and they don't want to help, I AIN'T PLAYIN' THEM EVER
