Finish adhering to Ivory

I have a few cues and it seems like some of the finishes out there do not seem to adhere to ivory very well.
Is there a trick or a brand of clear that adheres to ivory better??
Just curious, I would like to have one of the cues refinished but would like to have a little info first.

Wood, Ivory or anything else, The surface has to be prepared to accept the paint. It must be sanded down to 400- 600 grit sandpaper , wiped down with a grease remover & then sprayed. Ivory is no different than any other surface...JER

Ivory holds a finish almost as good as wood or phenolic. Some of the Ivory substitute plastic materials do not hold a finish all that well. Many people who purchase their cues second handed often think they have real ivory when it is a plastic material. If the finish is not sticking to it, I would suspect it is not Ivory or that the finish is inferior or improperly installed.

I agree with Jer. The cuemakers may sand the surface too smooth. It can happen with any material, not just ivory.

I agree also. I seldom, if ever, sand smoother than 320 and with some substrates I stop at 220. Solid colors such as ivory or ebony is when I go to 320 so as to be sure no scratches stand out. The finish needs something to bite
