Same thought I had - start your spray at the joint end and feather out after 3-4" or whatever you like.

Forget masking the shaft. Assuming you spray more than one coat, spray your first coat 8" up the shaft, your second coat 6" up the shaft and your third coat 4" up the shaft (or something along those lines).

When dry/cured you'll find that most of the "feathering" work is already done for you.

Still mask the shaft but you can feather the finish too....the masking tape (I use blue painters tape because it leaves no residue) will still give a sharp line but just dont use as much toward the tape... Practice it on a piece of purple heart I find it shows the finish better so you can judge just how much to use

I have been spending way more time and effort with my method. Your suggestion seems to be way more efficient. Can't wait to try it.

Start with 320 sand paper instead of 400 and you will be able to get that lip smoothed out.
