First Cue Suggestions

Hey everybody,

I posted this originally in "Cue Reviews" section but I think it would find more eyes here.

A gracious member has already PMed me with some suggestions but I'd like to see what everybody else thinks.

So far, my budget is about $200 (college student... money problems because my family doesn't want me working while in college... blah blah blah). I've been thinking about Players cues and I've heard a lot about them.

If you need any information, I like:
-Wood Grain cues with sharp in-lay designs (floating points)

Beautiful designs really help me get into a good state before playing ;)

I'd also like a few ideas for the future, cues and goals I could aim for when I start working. Budget shouldn't be a problem in the future so I should be able to pay a comfortable price.

For the future, I'd like:
- A low deflection cue (perhaps a Predator shaft)
-Long lastability - I want it to last as long as I maintain it
-Good cue ball action after the hit.

I've heard fanstastic things about Schon and J Pechauer cues.

Ideas fellas?

There are a couple of people selling OB sneaky petes for just over your price, $250 I think, in the for sale forum. I know at least one of them has beautiful bacote with lots of grain. I think that would be a great cue to get if you want a LD shaft, long lasting, and like wood grain.

I've heard the Players HXT line is fantastic and it's a safe choice. Resale is low so I'd pick the cheapest model in the lineup that you like the looks of because it already sounds like you're planning for upgrades down the road.

Sent you a PM of the two cues and case I bought as my first set (one year old). Players HXTE10 and Player's JB5 jump/break cue plus 2x2 case. Whole shabang within your budget.

Cuetec R360. Less than $200 and good enough for Shane Van Boening.

“I am excited about working with Cuetec. The Cuetec R360 has a better feel, better aiming system and more important better control. They make great products at very reasonable prices so I am happy to endorse them,” says Van Boening.

R360 hits very good. Make sure you get R360 shaft.
Cuetec's low deflection shaft.

Go on Ebay and buy a $39.00 "Lucky" cue from a Mcdermott dealer. If you don't the way it feels, try changing the tip for about &20.00. You will be amazed how good it hits.

I gotta second this. My first cue was some "Maximizer" brand Earl Strickland signature thing. Cuetec made it as an OEM brand for somebody.

I think I paid like $100 for it. I just last week retired it as a break cue, although it still gets some playing time. I probably bought this cue 17 years ago! Still straight as an arrow (having a carbon fiber wrapped shaft helps).

My next was a predator, and then I just found heaven with a Judd Fuller JT-1. The predator was a high maintenance deal. Constantly fiddling with tips and it's pretty damn fragile. Any LD shaft will be pretty fragile.

go to your local pool hall. They should have cue's for sale. Players are sometimes pool hall "standard sellers". See if they'll allow you to hit a few balls with several...chances are they'll say not to chalk them, but you'll get an feel for different sticks

Skip the years in between and jump right into the nicest Searing you can find ;).....but no seriously don't do this
