strokeless

Hi. This is my first post, hope it is ok! I am just starting my fourth year of pool. I absolutely LOVE the game and play league 2 nights a week, tournaments when I can, have a table at home but unfortunately work 70-75 hours/week so do don't get at much table time as I would like. I read everything I can get my hands on (including this forum which has given some great tips) watch videos etc.

I honestly play in competition FAR better than when I practice. When I practice I can't believe how bad I am after four years, but in competition I seem to step it up. My downfall is missing that one shot that costs me the game.

I have a twofold question. First, I have an outside chance of attending pool school this year or next - either at Jerry Breisbath(sp?) in Madison WI or another in Peoria IL (CueSports(?)). Any input on preference between the two? Second is I have read how you need to give a change to your stroke several weeks to sink in but since I have so little time to play, and no hope of ever becoming "really good" is it worth sacrificing being fairly competitive in the local area - and losing in the mean time - to become only a little better?

i couldn't say anything about your choices, other than madison is a darn sweet little town. and i would encourage you to make any change to your stroke that's necessary in order to progress your game.

cheers to your 1st!

Welcome! I've heard Jerry is a great teacher, don't know about Cuesports. If a change is needed, do it. An instructor changed my grip a few years ago and it took me about a month to get used to it, so if you're anything like me, it will take time, but worth it in the long run. With all the hours you work, I'm surprised you can still play league 2x/wk! Welcome to your new addiction...AZB!
:p

You might be surprised at how much you can improve with quality instruction.

Try this. Just roll 6 balls out on the table. Make sure it is an easy layout (nothing in the jaws...just a nice easy layout) and then see how many times out of 20 you can run out.

Based on the percentage you report back, the degree of your likely improvement after quality instruction and a good length of time to incorporate what you are taught, will be easiker to predict.

Welcome to the forum!

Regards,
Jim

Congratulations for joining. First Change your "strokeless" mentally you can't make fun of yourself or you will really be strokeless. I'd quit league if your are serious about pool. You need an instructor you need to learn basics and you need quality practice. jerry b is a good place to start. Their are other bca certified instructors as well check your local poolhalls or as a pro from your area. mark

I finally got a chance to give this a try and I'm a little embarassed to report back. First time I got 12 out of 20, expected better so I tried again and got a whopping 13!! I guess there is something to be said about consistancy:) I got good feedback about Jerry B. so now I need to decide if this is the best I can do after 4 years - and no significant life style changes in my future - will the time and expense to go to pool school do me any good:confused:

Welcome to the forum.

We've got a son who spent only a few minutes under Jerry's direction and it really helped him. He wanted to go for some real lessons with Jerry later on, but the opportunity never presented itself. He was just talking about that (again) a few weeks ago. I know he would give Jerry an A+ for instruction, but he doesn't have computer access to say so, right now.
