first table and question regarding cloth

uk member and thinking of buying an entry level pool table for the home for everyone to use(myself and the kids,and maybe the wife as well if it takes her fancy). the 'standard' size and the one i will be getting is a 7ft which i believe you call barbox in the states. would rather go for a bigger table but for the usual reasons (cost, space) we have decided on a 7ft. it will be slate bed and i was considering upgrading the cloth from the standard wool cloth to simonis 860.

is it a good idea to have simonis 860 on a 7ft or is it best to leave the cloth as standard?

860 is a great cloth. But if you think the kids will destroy whatever cloth is on it, yo may want to go cheap.

to be honest i think i may end up being the main user as my kids can tend to get bored of things very quickly.

is the 860 much easier to rip than the standard wool cloth.

and what about in actual gameplay is the wool cloth better suited for that size table? are the balls going to be flying uncontrollably on the simonis on a 7ft table?
 
What cloth is the most prevalent in the UK? If you play or compete outside your house, I would go with the cloth that you would normally expect to compete on - regardless of what size tables you might be playing on. I would choose the CB with that in mind too.

If this isn't a factor, then you can't go wrong with the 860.
 
this is our first table and i am no recreational or club player, so for now play will strictly be limited to the home.

and what do you mean about the cue ball? do you mean that you use a different cue ball to the one that comes in the set with the table?

Yes if it is not the one you would normally compete with. What I mean is that there are differences in the way some CBs play. So if you are competing you would want to get the most table time with the CB you would normally use in competition, especially if you are using the same cloth you would compete on.

Since none of this seems to be a factor, the CB thing doesn't really matter. Either does the cloth really.
 
My opinion, for what it's worth, 860 is a bit fast on a small table, and play with a cueball the same size and weight as the object balls.

i appreciate this but it is quite a bit of money outlay for us (about £800) and id like to try and get it right first time.

i was all set to go for the simonis then i read a few comments saying that it is too fast for a small table and it has an adverse affect to how you usually play the game. other people have said how it is just fine on a 7ft. so i dont know which way to go.

gameplay wise and how the balls run, is having the standard wool cloth on a 7ft table going to be comparable to a 9ft with simonis?

You misunderstood. I didn't mean the cloth doesn't matter at all, of course it does. I just meant it doesn't matter in the respect that duplicating the conditions of somewhere else you compete is not a consideration.

You might try asking for BB cloth recommendations in the mechanics section. Those are the guys that know what places want on their bar boxes.
