First Tip Install by Hand

Tough to shape that thing! I think I'll taper the top of the tip with a knife next time. Any suggestions on getting the sides to shine? Tried to burnish w moisture and a worn out Qwiz.

Pretty happy w it. Just a house cue though, it will be awhile before I try it on a good shaft lol.
 
You did a much better job than I did on my first tip. What were you using to shape it?

I burnish my tips with some spit and a small bit of leather.
 
Take an even finer grained sandpaper for the side until it's smooth.
Take a quick burnishing with heat (i.e. paper + a bit wet) for the side.

Finally take bees wax (if you like you hit softer) or Carnauba / synthetic waxes (if you like it harder) to the side, let dry and burnish with non-sandpaper.

You did a fine job :thumbup:
 
Use a hint of Q-wax and a piece of leather to heat/burnish. Most billiard supply stores have the leather for that application. Tip looks real good. Nice job.
 
Moisture

You really should not spit on laminated tips. Moisture will make laminated tips delaminate .
This where you need to spin the shaft or something where you can burnish the side of the tip with leather,.
You did allot better then I did on the very few tips I put on by hand.

What size pin is in your shaft and I will suggest a tool that you can chuck up in a drill so you can spin the shaft so you can burnish the tip..

Protecting the leather you cut into (!) from moisture and also impacts, ie splitting, feathering or somesuch.
The Carom guys also want to stabilize the leather on the sides as they're usually not using layered tips. They say it makes a difference and from my experience (I once spilled Renaissance wax on my tip's SIDE) it does make a difference.

Not too sure on the delamination by using a little (!) moisture. I do hope (and think) they're using non-water-soluble glue.

Must burnish with spit and currency. The highest denomination you have on hand. Or maybe an old $1 bill will work the best because the others have been revised.

I have been doing my tips for about 40+ years by hand. Here is a neat idea i came up with a few years ago.

Take an old joint protector and a spark plug socket. Insert the joint protector so the threads are facing out. You may have to wrap a piece of tape around the non threaded end to get a tight fit.

Put a socket extension in the bottom of the spark plug socket and put the extension in a cordless drill (my choice).

I made a small jig to hold the drill vertically and i control the speed of the drill with my big toe. Works great for cleaning and resealing shafts. Also does a great job of shaping the tips.

Wow you did a good job. How did you got the tip flush with the ferrule?

I put an ultraskin medium on my cue by hand today and it was a time consuming pain in the ass and looks like shit lol.

I wish I had a local cuesmith.

Looks better than most of mine lol.

I'm kinda out in the boondocks and have to do mine by hand too.

I'd like to know what tools you used also.
