Fitting a LD shaft on Judd Fuller n Jeff Olney 3-8-10

Hi, i would like to buy a mezz or predator shaft to fit it on my Jeff Olney and Judd fuller custom cue

Has anyone done that before ?
My main concern is that if i buy either a 3-14 or wx700 shaft, it may not be flush meaning the shaft may be bigger than the butt or the butt is bigger than the shaft, i hope you understand what i'm trying to say :)

F.y.i , my Judd fuller is a jt-1 with a 3-8-10 silver color sharp pin ( dont know how else to define ) and my jeff olney is a 3-8-10 silver flat pin with a hole at top of the pin.

Can anyone using a Judd fuller or Jeff Olney with a predator or mezz shaft share their experience ?

Thanks

I had a Judd Fuller sneaky pete and I can honestly say it was very easy to control cue ball, cue ball movement and action was so wasy.

Judd cue does have a thinner joint than most and it's true Pred or Mezz shafts are fatter at joint.

my advice is dont bother LD shafts, your cue ball action will be limited, i have not played with a cue that makes cue ball travel with ease like the Judd.

Hey Ctran, i love my judd as it has my favourite wood ebony handle and birdseye forearm, never seen a jt 1 like mine.

And yea ya're right,i tried everyone's judd and it hits solid from jt1 to jt 4 but i have no idea why my judd hits so soft so i need another shaft on it so i can play w it or its collecting dust in my case :((

I understand what you're saying...and it's a big "pet peeve" of mine too! I can't stand it when the shaft isn't flush at the collar!

I play a Mezz WD700 right now and sent my Mezz in for a rewrap. I'm playing the WD700 on a Schon butt...and there's just a "hair" difference between the two. I can feel it on when I'm walking around the table running my cue through my hands (just a subconscious thing I do)...and it breaks my concentration when I feel that "lip". LOL - I know it shouldn't...but it does!

You may want to consider sending the shaft to Judd to have him turn down the base of the shaft to match the collar on the butt...that's what I'd do if I was determined to play a certain butt with a certain shaft that didn't match. The only thing is then it's pretty much dedicated to that butt only...but I could live with that to make my player exactly like I wanted.

Best option is to buy a partial and send it to your cue maker for finishing, along with your cue, so both the threading and joint diameter are a perfect match. As I'm sure you're aware there are multiple iterations of the 3/8x10 pin. I once tried an OB shaft on my Olney cue and the fit between pin and shaft was super sloppy because the shaft was drilled to accept a 3/8x10 with a larger minor diameter. It tightened down okay, but then the shaft was much larger than the butt at the joint (my Olney has a pretty small joint diameter, probably around .830" maybe).

Partials would work for a Predator choice, but not Mezz. Mezz doesn't have partials...only option for a Mezz fit would be to have the 3/8x10 turned down to match.

Might be a reason to go with Predator though if the OP is on the fence about the two shafts...

Or just get an OB partial, and get it done right by a local cue maker. We already know how well OB works, and their customer service is second to none. And they support pool tourneys, as well as AZB. C'mon, this is a no brainer ;)

I would love that and Judd does do predator shaft but unfortunately he passed away from cancer abt a year ago.

Certainly remembered and missed as a great cuemaker who made cues for the greatest of all time Efren Reyes :)

Thanks for your advice but i dont really like the hit of ob prefer mezz or predator :)

OB partials

As some have mentioned partials are the way to go and I'd recommend an OBClassic + or 314-2/3.

Fitting predator 3-14 partial

Anyone knows a cuemaker that does top notch work on fitting a predator partial on a butt and also delivers on time ?

Also, mezz does not offer partial so if i choose mezz i have to buy a completed shaft with a 3-8-10 joint.
3 questions :

1)Does a 3-8'10 shaft fits all 3-8'10 butt as there are many variations of 3-8-10 and i heard some may be too tight or loose for the butt ?

2) say if the mezz wx 700 shaft is bigger than the butt, will it be a big problem for a cue maker to take some off the shaft to fit the smaller butt joint ?

3) and if the mezz wx700 shaft is smaller than the butt, am i right to say that its gonna be expensive and not worth the effort to ask a cuemaker to take some off the butt to fit the smaller shaft ?

These are things i'm a lil confused with, hope you guys can share ur opinion or experiences dealing with this situation .

Thanks

OMG...I completely forgot that. :(

Any reputable cue maker should be able to accomplish the same thing though.

There are variations. Judd used old school 3/8 10 . Probably my last choice for a joint screw as it tough to install dead straight.
A 5/16 hole before threading would make it too loose .

I'd send it to RAT at Mueller's if I were you.

BTW, Efren won his world 9-ball and a ton of other titles on 1" long melamine ferrule Judd shaft. He refused to use reduced end-mass shafts.
