Fix my break

Got a new break cue with the Samsara tip. I was breaking well until cue ball hits rack, ball flies straight upwards towards the solar system, happened twice. So what is happening here ???

The cue ball goes up because it is off the table when it hits the head ball. Try a more level stick. All break shots leave the cloth. If they are too far off the table when they arrive at the rack, you get what you've seen.

Bob is correct. If you can learn to control it then it becomes an asset as it pops up in the air letting the balls from the rack clear the area & lands somewhere around center table, exactly where you want to be.

All I can really add to bobs post is to take a little off the break and hit fractionally lower. Ideally the cue ball pop off the rack is extremely beneficial in that you can get the cue ball to rest mid table more often without it getting kicked up or down table.

Best break I've ever seen is a relative no body in pool but he had like a 3-4ft cue ball hop off the rack and planted the white plum mid table for the 6 or so racks I saw him play. If he had a run out game he would have been a real force to be reckoned with.

FYI,
Some of the best players on the planet explained this possibility to me.

If you break a lot, or are on a table that sees a lot of break shots, there can be that small, tiny hole/indentation where the CB usually starts during the break shot. And, as a result, it can cause the CB to start to bounce the split second it leaves the tip.

So what is the ideal contact point below center ball ?

Thanks

Try the same break, cue ball position and break stroke, but move the cue ball backward an inch or forward (if it already isn't on the string for break). This will change the amount of hang time the cue ball has, altering the break.

The ideal contact on the cue ball is about 1/16 to 1/8 above center. That is the center of the tip to these destination points.

Good Luck

It only happened to you twice? Consider yourself ahead of the game.

Your cue stick was at too much of an angle and it caused the cue ball to jump. You have to find the perfect angle between level and a slight angle. If your cue stick is too level, you will probably slam your grip hand into the rail; and for those who have experienced that pain, all I can say is Yeouch. It hurts. You don't want to do that.
