Flatter shaped vs more round shaped tip

I've seen (hard) ferrules ground to an hourglass shape from chalking.

Yet there are idiots that call themselves cue makers that think ferrule-less shafts are a good idea. It started with Black Boar Tony and one of his disciples Anthony Milanisi is carrying on with it as well. I mean what do they think ferrules are for?

Hello AZB Family! I’ve just realized something the other night after shooting some 1hole. My tip had gotten kind of flat due to me not shaping it for a while. I actually was getting more action then when it was rounded. I would love to hear if any of you have experienced this. I’m thinking of leaving my tips a little flatter than my usual dime shape.

I usually shape it to somewhere between a dime and a nickel and after that initial shaping I let it conform to my play style. For me, flatter, like a quarter radius is perfect.

Just play with it and lightly use sandpaper to lift fibers if the tip needs dressing. It will shape to how you play... completely customized to your style.

Constant shaping just prematurely wears out tips. If a tip is bad enough that it needs shaping more than at installation and maybe on only the most ear splitting miscue, it needs cut off and replaced with an actual good tip. A good tip needs almost nothing but the occasional scuff with sandpaper. Just press and roll the sandpaper to scuff. The goal is to not remove any actual leather.
