I travel with my cues.
I used to travel alot, international in and around Asia for about 7yrs. Never had my cheap cue lost or damaged. I've been based over 14yrs in Hong Kong.
I travel with my cues (on business or holidays) and always tell the check-in counter that they are as valuable as my life. They should take care of it properly or I'll sue the hell out of them.
(I tell them softly, nicely and nothing arrogant.) That gets their attention properly. I'm also a frequent flyer and fly this airline 95% of the time, so it gets that "Priority Luggage" tag as well.
Whether it's on my softcase or hardcase, I stuff the case inside a carton box and put Fragile sign all over and with the phrase "Nothing on Top" on all 4 corners.
With my warnings, the staff will not place them on the conveyor belt. (Have you seen those machine sorters work on the airport in Discovery Channel? It's scary when you see those mechanical buggage pushers. They can knock you dead, instantly.) They will carry them by hand or have it placed on a special conveyor belt that doesn't have those mechanical pushers. You have to check-in early though, specially in an airport like Hong Kong, which is huge.
So far, nothing untowards have happened to my cues.
