Fly with It Or Overnight It?

I used to ship mine in one of these. These things are HEAVY DUTY.

Friend of mine turned me onto them, he demonstrated how sturdy they were by putting 3 cues in it and backing over the case with his jeep. Thought it was a bit silly but made an impression. They are great to ship in also/not just for luggage on airlines.

Just an idea.

Actually Busman, things have come a long way with case for shipping cues on airlines. I just haven't been flying to try them yet.

However, there are those of us who still have reservations about making reservations with our cues and I'm just trying to get jiggy about some method to not go nuts. This is why I haven't been to any tournaments I have to fly to.

Why can't the airlines know that cue are NOT WEAPONS of human destruction off the table!!

Arrrggghhhhhh!!!

Barbara, sounds like you play primarily in the USA. Since you are afraid of the cue being broken or stolen and you'd rather have it with you (I too wish they would allow cues on planes) why don't you just drive to wherever you intend to play?

Sorry, but it's a 24 hour drive at least or I would.

Hey All,

I need your input here. Ever since the FAA has banned cues on board, I have only traveled once with my cue, and that was to Vegas, and I was sweating it all the way and back. Bought $5000 worth of insurance each way, and the damn airline company still mishandled the procedures they were supposed to follow!

So I have this tournament in January in FLA that I'm going to play in. I just talked to my Cueman and he suggested shipping it overnight to myself to the hotel we'll be staying in. Uh, my hubby and me that is, not Cueman and me. Although, we're going to Disney World afterward and Cueman knows his Disney World - that's why I called!! :D

So what does anyone recommend and, if you ship it, which company would you recommend? Cueman had a call to take this afternoon before I could pop the question. It was probably PaulyBatz, LOL!!

Call your airline company and check again on the rules for a cue.there has been some other changes so maybe they may allow it this time..it's worth a call......good luck

Cheap way...

2 inch inner wall diameter PVC pipe, cut to length, pack with newspaper, wrap shaft in polyethylene, pack for "check in" luggage. Butts, carry on.

Next step of cost...

Same as before, but use kevlar tubing. (yes, you can buy the tubing online for a nominal fee)

Best...

FedEx/UPS/USPS/DHL different days (Butts one day, shafts the next, or visa versa). Different packing for shaft and butt to arrive same day (yes, you can designate date of shipping or hold date).

Rinse, repeat when going home.

As you all know, a stick is worthless if not complete. Shipping on different days seperating butt from shaft, insures (in the common sense) that your stick won't be bothered with, let alone even considered of being stolen.

Think about it.

FedEx or UPS??? DHL Anyone??? Opinions??

I will do anything to get my cue there and home. Any Pros out there willing to share how they sweat the ride?

Barbara

It's only Florida (you're in NY right?), drive if you're that worried.

Edit: Wrote this before I read your post about the drive. I still would think a 24 hr. drive is a viable option if it's that important.

I've heard that some airlines allow cues now, but I could have heard wrong, check with the airlines as someone else already suggested. But personally I would NEVER let an airline touch my cues, there have been too many "lost" and the process to get reimbursed is long and tedious.

UPS it, FedEx, whatever, the amount of packages that get lost, especially if overnighted is very small. It is a little more money, but a lot greater peace of mind.

Losing a cue is not worth the heartache... I am with the FedEx shipping idea )and hold at their shipping point for you to pick up). I would not ship to a hotel.

I also know that it is nice to show off the great hardware at the tournaments, but cool your ego and buy a good sneaky-Pete or travel cue. And FedEx it with minimal insurance. It will allow you to travel stress-free and concentrate on playing. Leave the good stuff safe at home and have a sticker made for your travel case that says 'My other cue was made by Barry'.

The guy (or girl) with the best cue never wins the tournament anyway.

any idea if this is also for europe? or this a all-over-the-world-how-stupid-can-rulez-be thingy? :(

Just curious ...

But if you Fedex it, or UPS, or DHL, what is the cost range
for doing this? If you go this route, can you put a lock on
your travel case?

Even if you got a SP for traveling (which is a good idea), if
you got your break/jump stick or break stick and jump stick
lost, as well as accessories, it still seems like it would be
chaotic to the player. Plus, what if the Sneaky played okay,
but didn't 'feel' quite like your regular playing cue, and caused
you to lose out in a tournament where you might not have if
you had your regular playing cue.

You can overnight something within the US for about $30 each way using UPS. Given the competition I would imagine that FedEx and DHL are about the same price and I heard that USPS is a bit cheaper.

As far as the lock goes on a travel case I think the answer is no. I believe you have to keep the lock on your luggage unlocked, I would imagine the same rule would apply to any baggage that is handled.

I think the cost with insurance is a bit more than your estimate.

I know USPS Express is the cheapest method and it's basically $1 to insure $100 in addition to about $21 shipping cost from California to New York. UPS and FedEx overnight services are significantly higher, if insured.

So you ship to a Fedex site? Would you recommend this over shipping to the hotel we'll be staying at?

Barbara

I would suggest shipping it to the nearest FedEx station to your hotel, with a 'Hold for Pick-Up' designation on the label. make sure you pay for the declared value of your cue and case....this is where the bulk of the cost is to ship, not in the weight. This way FedEx is completely responsible for your cue and cannot release responsibility to the hotel.

I wonder who we could contact to start a campaign to get cues back on the carry on list. If they're allowing scissors and screwdrivers, certainly a cue wouldn't be a problem. I don't fly a lot with my cue, but it would certainly make the trips I do take a lot less stressful knowing my cue was safe in the overhead compartment.

Anybody in the industry have any ideas where to start? Airlines, TSA, etc...

Actually, you can lock your luggage.

They have special "TSA" locks where the only people that have keys are the TSA inspectors.

The only problem is taht while it keeps the bag locked from other airport employees, it doesn't prevent a shady TSA person from taking your stuff.

It's a b!tch either way.

Well it is a FAA (Federal Aviation Authority) regulation here and they have no authority over what goes on in Europe. So I guess you'd have to ask the question there.

The reasoning could be that a cue can hide a weapon, a pair of scissors can't. I'm just guessing at that.

It's irritating to see people carrying skateboards aboard with them, but we can't carry our valuable cues.

With as many members there are in the numerous pool forums, we could get a petition started. Are there any lawyers here who would be able to create a petition that could be made available online for us all to sign? Just an idea... or am I overly optimistic?

I already have one - a Ted Harris cocbolo sneaky pete because I got tired of packing the Boti away after every game in my bar league.

The guy (or girl) with the best cue never wins the tournament anyway.

Winning? Winning? I just want to play in a tournament I don't have to run!! This'll be a first in years!!
