flying with a cue

I`m fling out on new years eve to go home for a few days.I called American airlines yesterday and ask about carrying a cue as a carryon.I explained the cue is very expensive(over $10k) and I didn`t want to ship it or check it as baggage. she checked with her supervisor and was told that as long as the cue breaks down so it is not full length it could be a carryon. today I talked to a friend that flew last week and he said tsa wouldn`t let him carry his cue on and he had to check it.
anybody fly in past few weeks and have this problem.
 
Website was down earlier.just checked and they say no to carryon. I will make other plans.thanks
 
I bought luggage that is long enough to put my cue with my clothes....
....which is extra protection.

Many people ship the cues ahead of time. I would probably have more faith in an insured tracked package over sticking the case in luggage in the plane hold, especially for something worth a few thousand. I stuck my son's cue in the luggage when we went to Vegas for Junior Nationals but his cue is not worth nearly as much as yours, and I did not bring my cue at all, just brought the shaft I use and bought a $40 McD Lucky cue from a vendor onsite :smile: . Which brought me to try to ignore the fact that for a total cost of $140 of my shaft and the cue, I got probably over 80% of the performance and feel of my $1,000 regular cue LOL
 
I usually just pack my cue (not as expensive as yours, but fairly expensive) inside my suitcase along with clothes and stuff and have never had a problem, but if you are that concerned, I believe it might be possible to call the airline ahead of time and have it checked and handled personally in a special case and signed on/off by the airline staff when you embark/disembark (or not just what I heard on the forum some time ago)

I flew with a cue recently and got different opinions from the airline and TSA. I had to check the cue per TSA guidelines. Also the package was not normal sized so it got held up at baggage claim.

I say take check a cheap cue or don't take one period.
 
If you have connecting flights in different countries, remember to check those things from the security of the connecting flight airport. Here in Helsinki, Finland I asked the security in late November this year and they said I could take the cue in the plane as a carryon. The international flight security instructions have changed allowing cues, but I'm not sure if every country will enforce this change yet. But it should be allowed at the moment. Not sure what's the case in American domestic flights. Would be interesting to know what's the practice nowadays.

Thanks for everyones help,I talked to another friend who happened to be in the area and he is taking the cue home for me(driving).I will get it from him on my way home from the airport,he lives close to me.
 
I tried to carry mine on this morning out of Minneapolis and it was a no go so I had to squeeze it into my suitcase. Of course as I was sitting across from my gate having a Bloody Mary, there were 2 separate people that walked by me with 2 piece fishing rods. Apparently the rules don't apply to everyone!!

Depends on the cargo compartment. Some are heated, some are not. That's why we could carry pets in some compartments, but not in others. Put them in the wrong cargo compartment, and you get pupsicles. :eek:

I honestly don't know the actual temperature in the unheated compartments. Probably not as cold as the ambient air temperature, but still pretty darn cold.

DO NOT try to fly with your cue as a carry on. It's illegal as far as I'm concerned for the TSA or any government agency to stop you, but you will NOT get on your flight without checking it.
