Just to get the week started on an exciting note, I couldn't think of anything more appropriate than throwing in the great firestarter, tons of english and deflection. It just warms the cockles of my heart to see all of the Predatorites and deflection whackos going off like Chinese firecrackers over the mere mention of it's tremendous importance regarding the success or lack of success in this game.
Well...besides backhand english which eliminates the problem...here's another way to do it which I've also hammered out many times with little success to the cerebellum impaired that think you MUST use tip offset on every shot or you can't have CB control and you MUST be in total control of deflection from english or you'll miss.
Shawn Putnam has been on a veritable tear this year and he just chalked up another one this weekend. In the May issue of Billiards Digest, this is what was said:
In Putnam's story lies a microcosm of the way that many of the younger players develop. He possesed natural talent. He played well enough during his first nine years as a professional, winning a litany of regional events.
During that time, he played flashy, though, using ENGLISH whenever possible, and sometimes when it wasn't. Then Bryant, who is an APA instructor out of Houston, taught him to aim AT THE CENTER OF THE BALL and stop being such a fancy pants. "New players", Putnam says, "need to learn to crawl before they walk".
"Don't learn English before center ball. I WENT FROM NOTHING BUT ENGLISH TO USING NOTHING BUT CENTER BALL. Nine years before changing. It's too long of a wait, and IT COST ME A LOT OF MONEY. That's a big regret in my life right there."
Do you think he has any deflection worries using CENTER BALL? I don't!! Any deflection freaks on this forum think they can put a good ass whuppin' on Shawn Putnum any time soon? I don't!!
For all I know he may even use a Predator, and he might not. I have no idea. Either way it surely doesn't matter when you learn how to use center ball and work your way around the table with speed and angles. You can use ANY cue or shaft. But then again, you can still do that with backhand and not going to the EXTREME on shots with english, so who cares.
