''The other side of the Road'',,,,,,,,,

Bill,,,,,,,

I'm in the process of reading the book right now,,,,

It's incredible how Alfie's tale of pool hustling in some of the most dangerous places on earth , only to wind up being a guest of Morroco at the U.N...!!

Very colorful [ and vile ] charectars that make Hubert Cokes look like Mother Theresa,,,

Here's a book , that if turned into a movie by a film director who could garner a major Celebrity or two, could arguably do for pool in 2012 what ''The Hustler' did for the game back in the early 1960's...

Riviting read all way,,,,

.........Alan Ende.........

I am halfway through as well. This book is so good that I am forcing myself to savor it. This is my advice for everyone. Buy two copies. One to keep and one to sell. Someday this book won't be available anymore for whatever reason. To me it's as good as Rags to Rifleman and Alf's way of storytelling is especially captivating.

Dallas sounds like it was one tough place to be back in Alf's day. I mean I have heard similar stories from other people's books and recollections but Alf makes it really come alive.

So many good lines in this book too. "If you boys think you're gonna run me out of town.......you're right!" Great line and not near the best in the book.

To Mr. Ende and Mr. Barton

I can't thank you enough for your kind words about my book. It's just now getting into peoples hands so I've been on pins and needles. I've been lucky enough to not have anyone unhappy with it so far. Hope none of the guys I skinned sees it and comes looking for me. Ha! You're helping to
Keep it nice. Alfie

I'm still reading as well...but Alf, you can get off those pins and needles. A very well written book, indeed! I'm enjoying the read. What a life you have experienced. Don't know that I would have survived it. IMO, there should be a "sticky" here for people to give their reviews.

Yes Bill, that would be a better option than loaning it out...Your odds of getting it back, would NOT be good...;)

Just finished it today. Amazing. I am sure that there are a wealth of stories left to be told. It was the "other" side of the road indeed.

Any notion that I was ever a "road" player in any sense of the word are now firmly destroyed. I was and hopefully don't remain just the type of sucker Alfie would tax on his way through town.

As I mentioned above I have read similar stories from several authors. Reading those books made me foolishy identify more with the hero, the guy taking everyone off. Reading Alf's book made me realize that I have always been the guy more than willing to donate to the real player's fund.

I have never been really willing, or really able, to lay down the lemon to get a game. Reading Alf's book finally gets across how much of a true art it is to get in, get the cash and get out with it. This was something I would have had to study and be mentored in to have any chance of having a chance to match up with the best of it more often than not.

Alf, I want to say thanks. Rags to Rifleman made me imagine that I could be a shade of Buddy Hall. And I guess in some scores I was when I gave up the nuts and shot my way out. On the other hand a real pro like you were would have chewed me up and many did just that. I honestly rank your book and Buddy's book as the greatest pool reads by pool players that I have read.

I had to qualify that because there are other great books out there written by professional writers about pool players that are equally amazing. But seen through the player's eyes, in his own voice, I think that yours is the best one.

perhaps you misunderstood the 'Not getting anything" part. what i was trying to convey was even though your site said "order accepted" or similar verbiage, i dont think you will be sending me anything because my paypal account was never accessed.
