Found an interesting break last night

Last night after we were finished playing I was just shooting the balls off the table, banking them, and I came across an interesting break. See diagram.

Granted, I would never opt for this in a game but if the situation arose it's nice to know it's there. I have confidence in this bank so I set it up 10 times and made it 7. Every time, regardless of making the ball or not, the break was really good.....well, it's not a good break if you don't make the ball but you know what I mean. Looks like I'm favored 60% to do this though so I'll keep my eye open for it.

Yeah, I know it's 70% but to be fair 60% is more realistic.

At one National Intercollegiate tournament, John Guffey, who is now a cue maker, played this shot a couple of times, IIRC. The other players thought he was crazy. The cross-side bank is also said to be a favorite of Efren's.

I played one similar to this going the other direction and coming back to the rack once *but* it was against a friend and we only play for fun. No money involved and try the shots you think might go. You learn a lot about balls in the rack playing like that. hehe!!

That sounds a little like the shot Steve Lipsky recommended. I tried this one out, and it is VERY makeable. Thanks, Steve!

If you hit that hard enough to break some balls out of the rack, isn't the scratch in the lower left corner too risky?

The original thread isn't too far back (I don't have time to find it right now) but Steve said he's been hitting this shot for a long time and has never scratched. Maybe it isn't possible to hit it hard enough for the cue ball to scratch, I'm not sure. He said he hits this break maybe 1 or 2 times a month. Give it a try!

This break shot should be hit pretty hard. I have absolutely no experience in what might happen if you don't, but it's actually not that easy to get the right action on the cueball if you don't hit this shot hard. Played properly, the cueball should have a lot of side english. This also helps to make the rack so big.

The shot is actually remarkably predictable. You never scratch, you move more than a few balls (though the rack won't explode), and you have a shot afterwards.

Practice it, playing it with a good degree of pace. You'll become a believer!
