Four Piece Slate...

Anyone ever run into four-piece slate?

I've been working on tables a long time (15+ years) and today I found my first four piece slate table.

The slate was definitely more comfortable to carry, mostly because of the difference in width. But I can't help but question the logic of having a seam run from side pocket to side pocket.

Must have been a Connelly;)

No, actually it was an old BBC Remington circa 1920.

Connelly's making four piece slate?

That makes sense, back then they couldn't cut the pockets in the slate so they 45'd off the corners then made the pocket shelf out of wood, which explains why the 4 piece slate, so there would be 2 corners to 45 off, then make the pocket shelf out of wood.

Ive seen a few four peice antique's. And Connelly only does four peice slates for there ultimate because its 2 inches thick. Ive done a couple of those and let me tell you four peices or not there really really heavy:eek:

From what I can gather this is the only 4pc slate table they ever made...

A 4 piece slate table denotes a circa which does NOT Glen mean that it was four piece because they couldn't cut the pockets as they did it with 3 piece slate also. So Glen if they did it on 3 piece why did they do it on 4? why did they make 4 then if they could do it on 3 and did. You know everything so explain it.

I have done about 30 4 piece slate tables and can't wait to hear why their 4 piece now.

JE Came made tables with 4 piece slates in the late 19 th century. The Connelly Ultimate had 4 pieces (2 inch thick) slate. The Chevellotte billiard tables are 4 piece slate. They are out there.

i have only done one 4 piece slate and it was a
brunswick 8' OS(46X92) brilliant novelty

I also did one AMF 6X12 snooker table 8 legged with 5 pieces of 1 1/2 inch slate
but it was a new one.....(and it went into a private home)

I've worked on several 4 piece slates. Mostly on antique brunswicks, also on several carrom and snooker tables. I don't presume to know why they used four piece slates other that the size and weight!!

Rob....read my sentence again...and again, then take a look at what you posted a picture of. Is that not wood in the side pocket? Are them corners of the slate not cut off and the wood is used to create the pocket profile?...what did you get me on....besides NOT understanding the ENGLISH I typed out?

radius is round and a bevel is not

Yes it is cut and yes the pocket radius is wood. However the cut in the slate is a radius! Your post claimed that since they couldn't cut the radius, they made it 4 pcs so they could 45 both sides for the side pockets.

So.. If I am getting booted already why would I stop now? And, does this sound like an argument? I just want to bring you and your knowledge (or lack of it) into the light. You obviously don't have all the answers either. And from those two threads you have a proven history of talking out of your ass. Enough said, users of AZ make your own judgments.

I would rather be a prince in hell than a slave in heaven...

You are neither Rob, only a lonely lost soul here on AZ!

Why Rob, is the pocket shelf made of wood?

Rob, I swear to God, you're like a rotten, brat neighborhood kid, with a snot running nose, wanting to play with everyone....but no one wants to play with you, so you try going behind everyone's back to cause problems because no one will let you play.

Your problem is that behind a computer screen you can be as big mouthed as you want to be...but facing someone, you shut the hell up, because you know your mouth gets your ass in a bind....and I'm SURE it's been there before on many occasions.

You're the kind of guy I'd just knock the hell out of, and go on about my day...not even thinking twice about leaving you laying somewhere unconscious with a broken nose and a fat lip...waking up sometime later... wondering what in the hell happened to you...not even sure if it was real...except for that god awful pain you feel all over the side of your face...like you got hit by a truck or something.;)
