Many of you know Fred Wenker, especially if you live anywhere near the Baltimore area. He finished 2nd at Valley Forge in 2004, and has many other accomplishments that I am not going to try to list. I am very sad to say that I just received a phone call saying that he passed away this morning, apparently of a heart attack. He had a great sense of humor - so much fun to be around. One of the best bar table players around. I started this thread so that anyone who knows him might say a few things about this wonderful man.

I spent a lot of time around Fred and Leroy back in the late 80's. Fred was a Crazy, funny guy. In the late 1980's I attended an event at the Showboat Hotel in Las Vegas. When I was trying to check into the hotel, I found out that the hotel had overbooked and we had no room. My wife was expecting at the time and not very happy to hear that we would be staying across the street. Fred was standing in line behind me, overheard my wife giving me a hard time, and to make a long story short, my wife and I got a room that night as Fred explained to his friends that they had to stay across the street for the first night, and they would be getting a room in the casino the next day. Fred had a heart as big as all outdoors, and I'll never forget what he did for me that day. His friends never knew that Fred gave up the room for us. Fred was a great player and a great guy to run off to breakfast with. - if you could afford to feed him. I lost touch with Fred and most of the Baltimore crowd about 15 years ago. Fred's name still brings a smile to my face. May he rest in peace.

Hi cueqween,

I am very saddened to hear of Fred's passing. We played many great matches through the years both at Valley Forge and Lancaster. Regardless of the outcome of his matches, Fred always smiled and congradulated his opponent. He was a great player I feel was never recognized by his peers. I will miss him. My sympathy to his family. Please keep us informed. If there is a charity the family suggests donations be sent to, I would like to know.

That's so sad. Fred had played in many of our events and BBQ Bob 2 years ago in VF. Fred was was a great guy and will be missed. Does anyone have any service information? Please let us know.

I didn't know Fred, but watched him beat a friend on his way to the 2nd place at VF last year. Seemed very gracious and could certainly play well. I remember he had a wife and 3 or 4 kids watching him. They seem very devoted to their father and I feel especially bad for them.

That is so sad to hear! I got to know him from working at the tournament desk at the Valley Forge SBE for the past 5 years. He was always a contender to take the event off.

May he rest in peace and my sincere condolences to his family.

Viewings are going to be at Duda Ruck Funeral Home in Dundalk, MD on Thursday and Friday 3-5 and 7-9pm. I am trying to get some information on if there is someplace to send contributions/donations. Fred was 38 and leaves behind a wife, Vikki, and 5 children.

Hi everyone, sorry about the delay, but I do have the information on Fred's memorial fund. His niece is taking care of this. Since Fred did not have insurance, any contributions that can be made will be greatly appreciated. The information is:

An account is set up at First Mariner Bank.

Blackjack, thanks for your story. It sounds just like Fred to do something like that. I know Leroy as well, and he is quite a character!
