French Lick Resort

It's my understanding the French Lick Resort is renovating a building and going to call it their Billiard and Bowling Pavillion. Just wondering if anybody here has any news regarding this? I believe we have some posters from Indiana here on this Forum so I thought I would ask. It would be nice if they had some tables, possibly some leagues, or some open tournaments.

Anybody know or heard anything about this? And please, no stupid smart aleck comments from the usual crowd. All I am doing is asking if anybody has any inside scoop.

The blog says two pool tables are planned along with the six bowling lanes. Probably not enough for a league event.

I think the style of the hotel is to be a vacation destination with lots of things to do. Golf vacations, things like that. The prices look kinda up-scale.

I'd think this would be something for kids to do while their parents golf or attend a swinger's convention!! This area just isn't known for it's pool players so a league would be unlikely, especially in a Dave & Buster's type environment! French Lick hosted a pro tourney back in 99 iirc but other than that I've never heard of any players from that area or any surrounding counties.

The West Baden hotel used to have 2 pool tables in a room off the Atrium. No Charge.
The Bowling and Billiard room is a separate building next to the hotel.
The nightly light show in the large Atrium is pretty cool. You can get a room with a balcony that overlooks the Atrium.

Isn't this Nick Varner's home area.....sort of??
Believe Vaner was from Owensboro, Kentucky. Not sure if that was his birthplace, but I think it's where he called home much of his youth.

Regarding French Lick and Larry Bird, a lot of history there. There was an 18 hole golf course attached to the main hotel, later got trimmed to nine holes. There was a better golf course, called The Hill Course, a couple miles away. Believe there's a TPC golf course pretty nearby now, where at least a senior event or two has been played.

Larry Bird had an interesting house, a bit of a left turn on the main drag as you drove into French Lick. He had close to a full basketball court in the front yard. The story I heard was he later sold the house, and sued the eventual owners, because they were trying to promote it.

As for the West Baden Hotel, very interesting place. Interior balconies inside that big dome. Al Capone was a regular and had a particular room every time. He could be seen sitting on the interior balcony of his room.

Very interesting area.

Larry Bird is the favorite son of French Lick.
I played in a Miz senior tournament there…Larry Bird’s name was plastered every where.

Was that Mizerak's Senior US Open back in November of 1999? The one won by Howard Vickery?

I was in attendance a couple of those nights.

And Nick Varner lives in Owensboro but grew up in Tell City, Indiana. About 45 minutes south, down by the Ohio River.

I didn’t know that about Nicky….I knew his father and uncle from the pool hall in Owensboro….when Nick and I met, we got along just fine because of that.

Have only had the pleasure of staying there once but really enjoyed the grounds. Will definitely go back someday. Can't imagine there being a "pool scene" on property though they definitely have the space for an event with tables brought in for it. Big problem being it's kinda hard to get to if you're more than driving distance.

FL Resort has three of the best courses in the country. One by Pete Dye(he's from the area), one by DonaldRoss and the third by T. Bendelow. Not cheap but a super spot. The place dates from around 1900 as a spa/resort.
