Just got updated via cell phone by Young Gun Brandon Shuff. I asked him about his earlier win against Jeremy Jones, how it went, and he said it was neck and neck, with Jeremy winning the first game from the jump. Then Brandon surged forward, 3 to 1. The rest of the match pretty much see-sawed back and forth, with Brandon winning by a 2-game lead.

The format of the 9-ball event is a race to 11. Brandon said they prefer the format to be the breaker racking their own balls, but some players have diverted to the challenger-rack format by mutual agreement. In the match that Brandon beat Jeremy, they both agreed to to loser racks.

Brandon plays Power Breaker Larry Nevel at 6:00 p.m. tonight, both still in the winners' bracket.

For the 6 o'clock rounds, here's a few matches read to me by Brandon as he was looking at the chart:

Ronnie Wiseman vs. Warren Kiamco
Francisco Bustamante vs. Deo
Rob Saez vs. Robert Ray

8:00 rounds tonight:

Gabe Owen vs. David Tickle
Scott Frost vs. Santos
Nick Varner vs. Eric Moore
Tony Chohan vs. Sparky

Not too much action to speak of during the after hours, with the exception of both Tonys [Watson and Chohan] yesterday.

Picture of one of my favorite local players, Brandon Shuff, a youngster all of 22 years old. I really enjoy Brandon's enthusiasm for pool. He is, without a doubt, one of the good guys, and he's kind of a cutey pie, too. :)

Brandon started playing up here in Hagerstown... He has really turned into a fine player recently... I can still remember him being a light draw in our Sunday afternoon tournaments!! NOT ANYMORE!! HAHAHA Very impressed to here he took down Double J. You're right.. He's one of the "good guys".. Everytime he comes back up this way he always extends a hand and a hello. Hope he does well in the Carolinas cause he sure loves this game... How is his 1-pocket coming along?

I had forgotten that Brandon used to live up your way. I think he moved to Virginia a few years ago. He is developing into a very promising player. :)

He seems to have adapted to it like a duck to water! :p

Brandon mentioned that the tournament is running smoothly, and the players do appreciate the designated match times. :)

Thanks JAM

We have never met but I wanted to say thank you VERY much for your updates. Not just for the Carolina games, but for all your updates at each of the events you and Keith attend. You have no idea how much it makes having the internet worth it (to this poolnut anyway) to be able to read up sometimes almost instantly on the matches. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Keep up the posts. Will you be "reporting" from the Open? I hope so. :)

JAM, I'm with TX Poolnut. You're awesome with your knowledge, pictures, knowledge, and your thoughtfulness to share with everybody. (I'm sure Keith does alot too, and many others on this chat, but I personally am most familiar with your posting of info from the few times I show up here.) Very much appreciated!

Thanks for the good words, TX Poolnut and Gabe's mom! :)

I really am disappointed that I could not make it to the Carolinas Open this year. I am grateful to Brandon for taking a few moments to give me the rundown.

When he calls, I can hear the commotion in the background, the players checking their names out for upcoming matches. Buxton Turner is the TD, and he's keeping things moving along at good pace. I forgot to ask if there was a Calcutta, always a nice thing for the railbird sweaters and the percentage of it that goes to a worthy charity. :D

The lack of action in the after hours is a little curious. Maybe tonight the fun will begin, though the players may be saving their strength -- and cash :p -- for the upcoming U.S. Open, beginning next weekend.

[Pause: Brandon is calling me.]

Brandon just lost to Larry Nevel. He said he dogged it, and he's so mad. He had a real good start, but ended up chasing him the whole time. The youngster flubbed a straight-in 3 ball which would have made the score 9 to 8, but when the dust settled, Brandon got beat by Larry Nevel, 11 to 7. Poor kid said he didn't get to the table after he missed the doggone 3-ball. :(

Warren Kiamco beat Ronnie Wiseman, but don't know any details about the match.

Brandon and Ronnie go to the B side of the charts. Their next match is tomorrow at 12:00 noon.

What would we do without the Internet and cell phones!?
