The Ben Greene story:
Obviously by now you know I support and play with his cues.Yet people seem to shy away from purchasing, because he is not a big name. I've been playing pool since 1983.
Mostly in Wilmington, Delaware and Philadelphia. In my 20's and 30's I played every day. Even on Christmas. NEVER missed a day. My wife was a diabetic and needed a kidneyand pancreas transplant. Our schedules were very backwards. I'd come home from work and she would go to bed. So I played pool. Gambling and pool killed my second marriage. I traveled with the best in my area. Delaware Dogs and I would go anywhere to find a game. He is long gone. But still probably the best player the first state ever saw. Anyway I loved trying new cues. From southwest to libra etc. The list is massive. I took a 18 year break from the game. Moved to the lower part of my state and slowly took it up again. All new faces and names. That's where I met Ben Greene.
Ben started making cues about 25 years ago, in his small shop in Ocean City Maryland.
A good one pocket player he traveled mostly in the Baltimore area playing for money and took up repairing peoples cues. Started out the time Ted Harris was making cues at Gentleman Jims . Both of them thought we can make a better cue then the stuff we are always fixing. So they did. They had different opinions on what a cue should play like, woods, tapers etc. They still remain friends to this day. Everything Ben makes is by hand . He loves to use very exotic woods and will not sell anything he would not play with himself. Very much a perfectionist. I on the other hand have been in sales my entire life. I suppose that's were I come in. I bought one of his cues and it played very much like a cue Les Blevins had made me. I thought why had I not heard of this guy before. ?
Ben loves two things. First his wife and second making the best cue at a affordable price. Which he has done in spades.
However he does hate two things technology and sloppy work. He does not known a computer and still has a old flip phone. I told him about az Billiards and thought I could broaden his sales. He simply said okay what the hell. He is a fantastic cuemaker and a very personable guy. Extremely easy to get along with. The first cue I ever bought from him I've got listed on az for $350.00. And it hits better then any southwest I've ever owned. So that's basically it. Whether it be a player or a breaker I truly believe you'll be satisfied.
