ok, peeps.......here it is
I believe this Scruggs cue dates to the late '80s to 1990. The tulipwood has very nice color and streaked figure, and the forearm is a piece of super-tight curly/fiddleback grain that goes all the way around the wood, not just mainly on opposing sides (real premium piece of maple). With the old finish, the cue doesn't look as nice in the pictures as it does in person.
Unusual veneer combination that I don't think I have ever seen before (3 maroon/purple veneers and an outer black), kind of gives the illusion they are tulipwood points milled into purpleheart. The hoppe ring down in the butt sleeve is not ivory, some kind of white synthetic material, and has the older TS logo. The black linen is obviously with old stuff, with a very noticeable, pronounced weave. Silver trim rings at the piloted ss joint (5/16-14).
The overall condition is really nice for a player that's pushing 25 or so years old. It's seen its share of play but not much in many years. The finish looks old and is slightly cloudy, but virtually all of it is still there, and there are not many dents/dings/scratchs at all, like you would expect, just a few. It's nice and smooth throughout the butt.
Both shafts are original and roll nice on and off the cue. Of the two shafts, the thicker one rolls a bit better and is virtually dead straight. There's a slight bit of roll in the thinner shaft, but not bad at all and certainly nothing that would affect play. The butt rolls dead straight.
The thinner shaft had it's original ivory ferrule replaced at some point with melamine (the one with the thin tip in the pic). The thicker shaft has it's original ivory ferrule, with some nice grain in it and some yellowish color/streaks, no cracks or anything.
The finish on the shafts up near the joint as you should be able to see has been mostly worn down. There are a few small dents in one shaft, right up near the black collar (shown right at the bottom in one of the pics). Also a few tiny dents in the stroking around of the thinner shaft, which I'm sure could easily be steamed out. Thicker shaft is nice and smooth throughout.
The cue really does plays nice, I must say....just as you would expect from an old Scruggs player.
