Funny pic/gif thread...

Seen it on tv a few times. Boston Pops show. The canons sound weak. Have a couple instances on vinyl that really go boom. Just now occurs to me they are studio recordings. puzzling...:ROFLMAO:
Went up to a Fourth of July event in Boston many years (decades) ago, and they had the Boston Pops playing a free concert, I believe it was still being led by Arthur Fiedler at that time. This was right beside the Charles River, and the finale was the 1812 Overture being accompanied by fireworks for the cannons. Very cool event, had a great time, but like you, I was disappointed by the way the music and the fireworks didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Any idea what piece they're playing?
It's Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6.

The percussion instrument depicted is known simply as "Hammer & Box" or sometimes "Box Gerät". A large wooden mallet is used to strike a large wooden box or surface, sometimes called a "Dramer Box" or "Sledgehammer Box".

It is designed to create a powerful, dull sound which is supposed to symbolize the crushing blows of fate in the symphony. Mahler called for as many as 5 hammer blows, but that can vary by conductor. I'm not sure which performance is depicted in the picture.
