I see this too often. If there isn't a line waiting behind me, sometimes I do it on purpose just to watch them squirm. All the while I'm thinking1, 'what are you going to do for a living, and 2, what did you do during math class?
I get that more with immigrants that don't get the currency. Bigger stores have the numbers on the register.

I'd send my daughter's to the corner store for ice cream treats with a $ 20.00 bill and instructions to get a receipt , when they returned home I'd make both of them count the change back to me before they got to have a ice cream bar or sandwich ha ha !

What I mentioned was basically what I did at that age also ha ha ! My sense of humor gets me into trouble at times when I'm dealing with a person who is not doing well figuring out my change . usually its with someone I know .
I was about to comment I thought that was just I-80 in Wyoming. Jan 1 this year WYDOT website listed stretches of road as yellow. If I knew yellow meant total whiteout and hope to see an orange stick on the guardrail…. Laramie never looked so good. This summer they closed it to light trailers because of the 40 mph crosswinds. I’m just in a car not pulling anything, but I have come to dislike I 80 through Wyoming. Never seems good. The whiteout may have been worse than hitting black ice one time.
Great you did that. Small town 4th of July. Food booths run by local groups, churches etc…. Went to the ice cream booth and asked for 3 cones for us. They sold one thing. Ice cream cone for 2.75. The other worker would get which flavor. The high school age volunteer couldn’t figure out the cost. I said it was 8.25. She looked at me like I solved an amazing problem and asked “Really????”
