This was in fact the structure of the initial House Bill 1525 introduced in early 2026. But critics and lawmakers quickly realized the exact absurdity pointed out in the meme.

The final amended version signed into law in April 2026:
  • Bans possession of handguns and assault firearms for individuals under 18 years old (but allows for supervised exceptions like hunting or target shooting)
  • Makes it illegal for anyone under 21 to purchase firearms

So, a 20-year-old in Virginia can legally possess a firearm (one they already own) without being supervised.

Those restrictions are most assuredly not in the 2nd Amendment. As a matter of fact, for several decades now, the Supreme Court has stricken much of the language targeting 'assault weapons' and restriction of gun ownership by otherwise legally rightful owners.

Many of those Court rulings were based on very poorly worded laws, no doubt written by overzealous 'true believers' who primarily wanted their day in headlines, without any hope the law was actually constitutional.
