Funny thing happened when Scotty Townsend came to town

I consider myself to be a C+ or B- player. I am a 9 in the APA. I dont gamble a whole lot, that is not why I play pool. I play because I love the game and love competition. The Apa gets free pool from 4pm to 6pm. Every day that we are in there playing, there is always the guys that come and ask you if you want to gamble. They all use the line you will never get any better if you dont play someone better.(I do believe that it is somewhat true, but dont like to give my money away). The spot is always in their favor and they will never give you what you need.

Well low and behold Scotty Townsend and 4 road players walk in. You should have seen our local hustlers scram out of the pool area and make their way to the dart boards. I just had to laugh. I walked up to our 1 pocket "expert" and asked him what he was doing. He had 5 guys all with bank rolls and all would play 1 pocket. He couldnt even get his words out, all he could do was stutter. Our 9 ball guru said he wouldnt play because he didnt know what spot to get. I loved every bit of it because they got a big dose of their own medicine.

I asked Scotty exactly where did he live because he was listed as top 5 player in 6 different states. He said his home was in Alabama. He has lived here for the last 12 years. It was my first time talking to him, What a class act.

He told be a funny story about him and Bruce Berrong pitching quarters for $100 a pitch. Scotty won $1000 in 12 pitches. These guys will gamble on any thing

I played him years ago in the local pool room and he could not have been a nicer guy to play. I really liked the snake skin boots with matching belt. Rattlesnake if I remember correctly.

Good story. It's not only that the local money players only play if they have the nuts -- but if they do play you for a soda or something small -- I found that it's only to get a good read your current speed.

Typically I just practice alone, and one guy will sit and pretend to watch TV -- but all the while he is listening to how many balls that I make without missing. To prove my theory -- after running a couple racks of 9-ball -- when I eventually missed -- I silently pushed the ball into a pocket (delay simulating a bank or something) -- and sure enough -- the guy looks up in my direction in surprise that I "hadn't missed yet".

The other day when he just asked to play for a soda...I purposely missed some easy shots and runouts -- to the point where he said, "What, you haven't been practicing because it's summer?"

When I lived in Athens for awhile, I worked with a kid who said he knew Bruce and said they were watching a football game that he had 500 bucks on, and Bruce had about 1000 bucks on. My friend said he was nearly tearing his hair out and Bruce just took a nap during the game and wasn't sweating the game at all.

Its just Monopoly money to these guys sometimes. Of course the guys who treat money like this usually are gamblers from an early age and don't "work" for a living. Not that making $$ from gambling is easy, but its a lot harder to throw your money around that lightly when you just worked a sh!t job 40 hours for it that week.

I was stationed with Bruce's Step Father in California. Bruce came out to visit his mother and I got a chance to shoot pool with him at the local community center. He was 15 and atleast 6' then. His break would burst your ear drums. Bruce was telling me how every one would sneak him in to the bars to gamble. I dont think he has ever held a real job. That was the only time that I could ever beat him. I ran across him 6 years later and he was giving me the 6 out.

I pitched coins with Scotty in Atlanta for $100 a throw after I learned how to pitch FROM Bruce. Only, Scotty was giving me two throws to his one. I jumped out to an early lead and was up $400 but Scotty didnt have enough to pay me the fourth hundred. Dean Moore gave him a roll that must have been at least 10,000 . I said jokingly, "Are you sure that's enough to fade this $100 a throw action Dean?", lol. Anyway, we ended up breaking even.

From my understanding they pitch to the footspot on the pool table, is this correct. Or do they actually pitch to a wall. Scotty also told me that he gives a spot where one guy pitches from 10ft and he pitches from 30ft.

APA 9, in my Book, is a `A` player.

It depends on where you play...I play in the APA (sparingly) in Bloomington, IN and am a 7 in 8-ball and a 9 in 9-ball and still beat most of the people fairly easily. It's not fair because if I go to the state events and play the people from Indy and Louisville...they are much better than our 7's.

I have played in a lot of different places, with have being in the Air Force. I think that the APA has some 9's that should not be in the league. We have a 9 here in Montgomery Alabama that beat an 8 75 to 11. I am a 9 and he gives me the 7 out. I do consider him an A player. He can string 4 and 5 racks all the time, I can only sting 2 or 3 couple times a week. My break sucks. I am at the bottom of the 9 skill level. The 4 other 9's in my league have to give me weight. I am like the 5th best player in the league but still a B- player at best.

The story with Bruce and Scotty is true. They were pitching closest to the spot on a pool table and Bruce is no sloutch at it. In fact, there are only 2 people I can think of right off that Bruce doesnt have to beat pitching coins...Scotty and Danny Greer. He also plays a MEAN game of Galaga too. Ask the guys in Mobile, AL. about that....:D

If you are stringing 2 - 3 packs together a few times a week, I would at least think you are a B+ player, unless I am way off on my player rankings.

I agree with the guy stringing 4 - 5 packs is probably an A, but I also think you are underestimating your rank.

Wasnt quit sure, I was in the usppa 12 years ago and was a 65. We dont have tourneys here with A B C or D players. So wasnt sure how to judge A or B player. We only have APA or Open tourneys.

Damn Tiger, why did you give me negative rep. points for my post???? Oh well.

APA ratings for the birds

I have been banned in 2 APA pool rooms because they said my rating wasnt up to speed....... Local players dont like getting beat on their own green :D

So you are proud of the fact that you are sand bagger, sorry but I am not sure that is something to brag about. This is why many of the honest people get turned off by pool leagues.

If I did it was by mistake. I went through and gave every one positve that replied to my post. Sorry if I made a mistake. I will see if it will let me give a positive one. I am new here and wouldnt do that on person unless some one was being an a$$. I try to be fair and have not giving any one a negative on purpose since I been on here.
