I just read a thread that G10 can, and will damage pool balls. Is this true?

They said to stick with phenolic tips, or anything softer than phenolic, but that the glass resin tips are harder than the phenolic balls and will chip and dent the balls.

If this is true, then I guess I don't need to buy the new jump cue I was looking at with the G10 tip/ferrel.

When I bought phenolic I was hesitant to get a jump cue with a phenolic tip, because I had heard stories of phenolic tips chipping the cue ball as well. However I haven't had any problems with phenolic, YET!

I would like some incite on this please if anyone has any. Feel free to tell me what or what not to do! LOL

Thanks in advance!!!!

G 10

I have the G-10 ferrules on my jump/break, and jump cue. I have installed close to 50 on other peoples cues and haven't heard of any instances where the cue ball has been damaged. I have seen the Aramith (Valley)cue balls when they first came out get damaged from Phenolic.
It is possible IMO to damage a cue ball with a G-10 ferrule, but it would be rare, most players can't generate enough energy to do actual damage.
The benifits far outway the possible problems. Jumping is effortless using the G-10.

I know jumping is effortless with the g10, I tried one out and absolutely loved it. However after reading what it would do the the cue ball I have been hesitant to actually buy the jump cue with g10 ferrel/tip

If you look very closely in good light (with good eyes)...you'll be able to see slight curved cracks in the finish. Looks almost like you stuck your fingernail into the ball. Ask Viking director Mike Janis.;)

Is that with a break cue and G10 or a jump cue and G10? Or is that phenolic?

Just curious cause I want to be sure of what you are talking about.

I'm talking about the G10 & the standard phenolic. Break or jump cue, I don't think it matters.
The canvas-resin tip seems easier on the cueball, obviously due to the high amount of canvas impregnated into the material. Helps it to hold chalk much easier too.:)

Of course it's true. But, there's a whole slew of other things that can also damaage pool balls.

As far as G10 is concerned, it's a glass-filled thermoset. It's abrasive. It's supposed to be. The glass fibers make it strong, but it's the abrasive quality that will more readily affect the cue balls.

I can understand the concern when referring to breaking, but if you're just considering a jump cue I doubt you'll be putting enough power into it to damage anything.

Rob <=== after reading this thread REALLY wants to try a G-10 break tip

The G10 really jumps well! I didn't care for it for breaking, but I guess I am just set on the hard water buffalo for breaking. More control, and I am consistent as hell with them. So I don't see a reason to change my break tip. However the G10 is like a super bouncy ball or something! I had no problem jumping 3 diamond lengths, and I am not a very good jumper to begin with. Anyway, that is why I was considering a G10 jumper, but like I said if it is going to damage my pool balls on my own table then I will opt to keep my phenolic and just get better with it. It jumps really well too considering I started out with just a hard water buffalo tip on a jump cue!

G10 ferrule

I had a great Cue maker in San Francisco put a G10 ferrule on my Predator Z shaft, along with a Water Buffalo tip. I now play 3-cushion with this cue...indestructable and surprisingly no apparent damage to the shaft. I expect it to snap after every shot and it just doesn't.

Also, air damages pool balls, so, of course G10 does as well! It's a question of degree, and to that I would admit ignorance.

If anyone is interested in trying out a G10 jump cue on the cheap then I have an offer. Nothing fancy but I have a Cuetec shaft that I refitted to accept 3/8-10 and made a little shorty handle to fit it. It indeed has the G10 tip threaded down into the ferrule. Jumps AWESOME!
I know this isn't the for sale section but I'll let it go for $60 shipped Priority to the first person who wants it.:)

I have put circle cracks in the CB with my phenolic tipped stinger. My BK2 does not seem to leave them...............

Eric.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for responding. I am still undecided if I am going to get a jump cue with the G10 tip/ferrel. I do appreciate all the advice though!

The G10 WILL damage pool balls. I had a friend who had a G10 Jump cue and his own measles cueball. Before long, it was dotted with dents.

If you are thinking of buying the lightning G10 break jump....you might wanna save your money...I've had 2 friends who've bought it and sold it in 1 month cos they didn't think it was all that good.

I have done the same, the stinger will put the small half moons in them.
