Gambling Amounts

do you posters out there really have the $$$ to gamble/bet, etc, that is talked about on here?

somebody offered to play me for $200 a set and thought that was a small amount. i about had a cow - i dont have $200 to blow in case i lose! i have bills to pay, mortgage, car, electric, phone, cell phone, credit card, retirement to save for, etc, etc.

there is a thread now about Incardona/Bowman playing for five digits. jeepers creepers, folks..........

i told a couple of guys shortly after i got my GCIV they could come over and we could play 9-Ball for a few hours, each throw in $50, and keep track of who won how many racks and then split the $150. they thought that was chump change. i thought since they played a ring game with the winner getting $1 from the others it would be enticing to them.

i keep my gambling to a minimum. 10-40 dollar sets mostly trying not to lose more than 100. sometimes if i feel friskey i bet 100 but those times are few and far between. yo i got bills to pay and a nasty cue fetish i got to take care of ya know

i'm unable to play anyone now because of sever back problems, i'm leaving for Germany for more lazer nerve cutting over the next month, i have been in bed 20 hours a day for the past 2 years, i have a good once in a while and on those days i play, i havent played in 9 days now because the pain it just too much, i refuse to take enough drugs to eliminate it, i take enough to take the edge off, but not to play, Jay Helfert will verify all this, i'm not dodging anyone or BSing. i'm very sick, nothing life threating but almost bed bound.

I will play tooth for what ever he can stand when i'm healthy, he isnt able to high roll me, he is a better player than me especially 1P but we'll make a game, I dont need the action or any $$$ I will win, so the pressure is on him, I like him and respect him Tooth is a living ledgend and if he makes a fair game with me we will make history, I live in Vegas part time and have zero temptation to gamble I can walk into a casio with $30,000 on me and bet $5 on black and walk out, point being I'm not an action junkie and his bankroll dosent impress me. Some people get stupid when they see a chance to make a score and get out of line, tooth, boy george, jason hall all used that move and win. it wont work here, i hope we do play. it would be great. there is no bad blood with us. I just have to get healthy then we can start negoating a game. but for now sadly i'm sidelined.

Sorry to hear about your situation, I wouldn't mind watching you guys go at it if the match ever takes place. Tooth seemed like a pretty good guy, he cracks me up though. After the second night when Manalo took out Fernandez here in Sacramento Tooth came in with a large board with holes cut into it. Each had a number next to the hole. He put the board down which had a ramp on it and started woofin at people to roll the ball down the table and let it come back and up the ramp. He was doing this for 20 a roll or more. Tooth turned into a total carny before my eyes! LOL Chohan was so pissed that he was using a table for other than "real pool action." I watched Tooth hussle thousands off of those guys! He even got Chohan for 400.00, MarK Haddad was getting a little pissed over it as well. It was a pretty fun night with action floating everywhere. Wish you were there.

Personally, I don't gamble much, but I will for cheap sets, $50 - $200 races to at least 7 (usually $50). Unfortunately, I don't get to practice enough to play for more than that because I have other priorities.

However, I will bet big on other games (football) or back a better player up to $1 - $5K if we get the right game. I know I am not good enough to play for that much, but I am willing to gamble a little if I like the game.

I've played for as high as $2500 a set, but everytime that I've played for $1K or more, I either had a backer or was part of a corporation. Like so many on the forum, I do indeed fall into that trap of "Wow, I need some weight," but not "Wow, I'd like to back you or send you to this spot or that spot." And I too work for a living, so I'm generally limited to $200-300 a set these days.

Sure. Doesn't everybody?

But seriously, a lot of people will have the $$$. But the real question is, do they gamble it on pool? I don't. Not on my pool game. But, I gamble at the casino a couple times a month, and I'll sweat a bet here and there.

Let's see, the Casinos have about 200 employees all working for the house to make money. They have oodles of electronic equipment to nail down the odds on every single bet placed. They ply you with free liquor to impair your judgment.

I think I would rather take my chances with 1 other player that I could nail down better for skill, and negotiations.

I have played for up to $3,500 a set, and played quite a few $1,000 and $2,000 sets. Normally, in my home town, I play $100 to $500 sets, but they are far and few between anymore, $100 sets aren't, but higher is.

I will go down to $50 sets, but refuse to play for less than that. Usually, the $50 or $100 sets are with friends just for something to do. Or will play in a 4-6 man 10 ring game for $3 on the 5 and $5 on the 10.

The days when a guy can walk in anywhere and play even $50 dollar sets are gettting more scarce. Times are tight right now, and people are smarter. "Catching" someone is very rare, now. Twenty years ago, you could easily scuffle a hundred or two a day. Not so much, now. Leagues, the internet, magazines, all help players to stay informed. However, occasionally, when both players feel they have the best of it, you'll see action. I do so miss the times when people had plenty of money, and would send it in.
