You should understand that I am busted almost on a daily basis, so it's almost a financial necessity to ask for gas money in advance (if I'm even lucky enough to still have a car after finishing the session). I am willing to pay the time when I lose. We should play as soon as possible...fortunately I'm located in VA too, so I don't think that will be a problem!

1) you gotta take 6-8 and the breaks and bet it all unless you're really scared of VAP

I'm not a gambler for the most part. I'll play the occasional small wager set, but that's about it.

A difference of opinion came up with some friends the other night about some gambling terminology.

Is there a difference between giving the 7 ball and giving the "wild" 7 ball?

Or does this all come down to what's negotiated before the set?

In a lot of places there's not a difference. But it's really important to clear up the details beforehand for two reasons: 1) There are regional variations of what these things mean, and 2) mid-game interpretations tend to be self serving.

Issues are

sometimes the 7 is wild; sometimes it's "call."
sometimes it's wild except on the break, when it spots up.
sometimes the 7 spots up when the player giving the spot makes it on the break too.

I spoke to players from Winnepeg, CA a few weeks ago who said "getting the 7 ball" there means the same thing as "getting the 7 out," i.e., the 7, 8, and 9. I haven't seen this interpretation anywhere else.

One thing does not vary from place to place: wherever you are, the person getting the 7-ball is usually not getting enough weight.

Spots ...

People trying to 'hustle' someone always keep a ball and a half for
themselves. If someone offers you the 7, he is still figuring that if
you get lucky, (which would mean about a ball difference in your favor),
he would still have a half ball edge on you.

Taking the 6, or 7, or 8 from someone that can always get out is not
a spot because you never get to shoot them. Try it sometime, and
count the number of times you actually get to shoot at the spotted balls.
You are much better taking 'games on the wire' rather than a ball
because they are a sure win situation not a maybe situation.

And for the guy who said he would rather play by game and not sets,
you have never evidently shot for 16 hours straight by game and broke
even .... I know I am not going to do that again, and haven't, except
for an occasional challenge table game. My time and expertise is worth
something, and I am not going to put in intense effort and concentration
on my part only to break even in the end. With sets, even if you are
even after playing several hours, you can always play one more set so
someone comes out a winner.
