game to practice safeties?

I heard the idea somewhere, I think you just use a 9-ball rack and get a point if you hook your opponent and cause a foul.

Anyone ever play something this? What rules exist or do you think would make sense on the break or for the rest of the game?

9-ball rack, points for hooking your opponent and causing a foul.
Race to 5 or 7 usually 'cause it takes a long time.
Allowed to sink object ball to set up next safety.
Make up the rest as you go.

This is a great idea and REALLY fun. I played the local 16 year old genius in a race to 5 and it took about 35 minutes.

I've heard of something like that, but I don't know how it goes... I just play 9-ball. If you want to work on safeties, play safe more! The opportunaties are always there.

Speed control, tangent lines, and kicking systems come into play for safeties; if you are having trouble with safeties in general (or would just like to improve your safe-game) I would suggest isolating your practice to one of these three seperately. The sum of the three result in excellent safety-play.

Not to sound condisending, but here are a few safeties to look for:

1. When there is another ball very close to the object ball, get shape for the safety and play a stop-shot to "knock the object ball out of there."

2. With ball-in-hand, you can almost always follow up to another ball...it's easy to get, but speed control is how you really hook someone.

3. When there is a ball (or multiple) on the long-rail near the corner from 1 diamond to 2 diamonds out, line up your tangent and slow roll up in that mess.

4. When the object ball is on the rail and another ball is about a diamond out from hit, softly bank out the object ball and follow up behind the other ball.

5. When two balls are straddling the corner pocket, you can use the 2-rail kicking system (parallel to the midpoint through the pocket) and use the tangent right down that path to hook someone behind the other ball.

Take note of #5 here, it combines all of the three. Kicking systems can help you find a line to hook somebody, like a roadmap; then all you have to do is match your tangent line to it, and watch your speed.

sometimes ill break a 9 ball rack and just play safe on the 1 ball until i foul, then sink the 1, play safe on the 2 until i foul etc

here are a few rulz that i can up with. using 9-ball:

designate 1 person as the ball maker and the other as the safe player

Using APA rules
Ball maker gets pts as they would in a normal 9 ball rack

Safe player gets:
1 pt for foul
2 pts for foul that results in a scratch

the Ball maker plays their normal handicap, the safe player just tries to get as many pts before the ball maker reaches their handicap pts

safe player must play safe with ball in hands
safe player can pocket a ball or 2 to set up a safe
ball maker not allow to play safe at all

I like Johnnydub's idea. Think I'll try it. And that is the best compliment.

Or you can play 1 pocketed ball. Shoot nine-ball but you can only pocket a ball on your first shot, then you must play safe. Score by balls, 5-wins. Thank Rusty in Waldorf for that one that helped me a lot. Simple and effective.

That might help the speed control, and tangent line, but there aren't many 9-ball-type safeties in 1P.

I play a 9 ball rack and only play safetys. You get 1 point per number of rails the other player has to use to make contact. 3 points for a miss. Usually play first to 21 points

Who is Rusty in Waldorf? I used to go there for $ in the 80's, but haven't heard mention of the pool scene there in a while...

The two or more rail champion of Waldorf, of course... shaky Rusty Chaney.
