gaps on side of cue tip Huebler

Hello,

I notice a space or gap on the edge of the cue tip where I can see light shine through. Is this a push in style of cue tip or something? Does the tip cut off with a razor and glue a new one on like other cue tips?

Also, the black plastic ring is broke off the shaft near the joint. Do you have any DIY tips to fix that?

I think this cue may be from the late 1970s or so. I think the shafts are legit because they have the nylon insert.

Thanks in advance.

It’s hard to tell from the picture a closer inspection would show more. It almost looks like the tip might’ve shrunk or something, and pulled off the ferrule, but still stuck to the tenon.

Possibly a simple tip change, but the ferrule needs to be checked to make sure it’s not loose as well.

The ring fix is more complicated and tricky. To make it less noticeable and you’re doing it yourself, maybe filling it in with black epoxy or superglue being extremely careful not to get it on the other rings, but a cuemaker or tech would be needed to replace it.

Welcome to AZ. I'd put this in the 'Ask a Cuemaker' section. Get a lot more useful info there. Cool old Hueb.

I agree. I will say the ferrule most likely shrunk and needs replaced.

Yes. I have seen exactly this on a number of these cues. I have a lot of old cues and have seen this a lot, and not just on Hueblers. I have also seen cues the same age with the same ferrule material look perfect. Must be environmental factors.

Easy fix for a person with a cue lathe along with the ferrule issue. I wouldn't DIY any of it. Welcome to buying and owning old cues.

OK I think I'm starting to see what happened. The tenon is protruding from the ferrule a little bit. I think if I remove the tip, it would confirm that. Then I could use a file or sandpaper to make the tenon flush with the ferrule again.

You could, but probably shouldn’t. Unless you really know what you’re doing, don’t mess with it. Take it to someone that does quality work. Owning a lathe doesn’t mean they know how to use it. I do all my own plumbing, electrical, tree work, etc. I would not mess with it.
