Garage A/C and insulation?

I have moved my shop from the pool room back to the house. When the house was built, I had A/C built in to the garage. It has a seperate 1.5 ton unit on the garage only.

I am wondering if any of you have experience in insulating a metal garage door. I would like to know the best way and what kind of results to expect. Right now I can't get under 84 in the daytime due to the sun beating on the metal door all morning.

Anyone been here and done this with success?

PLEASE don't take it wrong... but I would appreciate replies of experience only... I have already received all the speculation and assumptions, believe me.

Thanks.

Cut two pieces of foam board to fit against the inside of the door or doors...I'd go at least 4 inches thick...

I use batton (spelling?) insulation stapled to my wood door and there are lip type seals to seal the outside of the door to the frame. I live in colorado and for me keeping out the cold is the issue. However insulation works both ways. I assume you are refering to a standard 4 or 5 section metal door that opens upward. If so my friends here use the foil backed styrafoam type insulation cut into long strips and glued to the door with liquid nails. They have a fiberglass type tape to seal the joints inbetween the door slats. I believe it is a pipe insulation tape. I think this will be your best bet unless you are able to block the sun from hitting the door.
Have you checked the outlet temp at the evaporator on your ac system? Just a thought. Chris.

two layers

First the silver "bubble wrap" type insulation then the one inch foam. Both work fairly well for metal buildings and doors, together they should make a real difference.

I know a lot of heat comes through the door but have you sealed around it as much as possible and checked for other poorly insulated areas and air gaps?

If you have the cash I would buy an insulated garage door. I have seen some with pretty good R rating that are about the same price as a standard door. The best alternative I've seen (2" foam wrapped in silver bubble type and taped on with metal tape) still costs a few bucks for the materials. I highly recommend against fiberglass batting of any kind.

Petree,
In my old shop, I tried Batting, foam board, and still was not totally happy. The new shop I replaced the old garage door with a insulated door, and WOW what a difference. It cost me $250, but I spent over $100 trying to get the other non-insulated door right, and still was not right. If you want to tackle the job yourself, Home stores have lots of variations on insulated doors. If not call your local garage door dealer, and they will be there about an hour for the job, and take you money with a smile. Good Luck!

New door is the way to go.

I bought 2" thick foam & it slid right into the frame of the door sections. Works good for me...JER

What color is the outside of your garage door? No matter how well insulated the door is, a light colored door will reflect significantly more light (heat) than will a dark colored door. The more light that is reflected, the less energy is absorbed as heat by the door.
