I receive an inquiry through the 'Contact Us' link on OnePocket.org asking about "Garland Hutchison" -- a name that came up in a feature article about Donny Anderson published several years ago in the Greater Cincinnati Sports Magazine. I figured I'd pass this question on to the AZBilliards community, too...

Just on the off chance ... I saw the name Garland Hutchison mentioned on the Don Anderson\'s \"The Cincinnati Kid\" web site. Do you have any info on Garland?

Nice article, but I'll take a few exceptions and set the record straight. Number one, Chicago Freddie (me) did not fall victim to Donnie Anderson in Bensingers. I beat him out of $400 at 50 a game. In the 40s he did not terrorize "Benzingers" (the article's author's misspelling). With people like Eddie Taylor, Rags, Fats. Pony and a whole assortment of other monsters there that played on 5 x 10 tables, that was a remote possibility. Also, the story that CornBreadRed hid from Donnie for three days is laughable. Red, was the guy that people ducked. Anyone who hung out at the Rack in Detroit is rolling on the floor giggling at the thought of Red hiding from a pool player. Now to give Donnie his props, he was a great bank pool player, one of the best ever. He and I played 5 times and he won thrice. The author does bring other credulence to his article when the mentions Tom Smith, the only nonogenarian pool hustler. Yes, Tom Smith was still hustling pool while he was in his nineties. The last time I seen or heard of Tom was at a BCA 8 ball tournament in Tenn, about 25 years ago. He was 99 years old. He may still be alive.
On the plus side, Donnie's HOF speech at the dinner was probably the funniest and best ever. He roasted Truman and me mercilessly.
