I wouldn't use water hard putty... www.waterputty.com/repairs/precautions/... for slate repairs of any kind. Brunswick recommends it for slate seams... I wouldn't use anything under the cloth that could chip or flake. Just my opinion again... Don't use water putty... Ever!
