Get upset if you want, I will never do it!

May be off topic but I get the OP's point. While some concede as a sign of respect, or acknowledgement that their opponent is shooting very well, there IS that chance whereby ANYTHING could happen.

IMO, the benefits of not conceding outweigh the respect your opp may feel if you give him/her a courtesy game. And we've all seen and heard people say "You gonna make me shoot that?!?"

Some people get genuinely offended, while others may be joking.

No point here really, just that there are two sides.

inside english, you just reminded me of a particular match of mine years ago ( which further illustrates why it is foolish to concede balls ) my opponent is running out, looking great on every shot, he gets to the nine ball ( which is a shot of medium difficulty ) and he just gazes at me for a few moments and then I said "what?" so he said arrogantly "you're gonna make me shoot that?" I looked at him squarely in his eyes and said "yeah, hang it up for me one time, I need all the help I could get!" he gave a half smirk, then proceeded to shoot and it was something out of a horror movie ( for him ) not only did he miss it, but everything was out of wack! he one stroked and jumped a mile in the sky! I'm telling you, it was as if someone else came in and shot that ball because the guy that was running all those balls and shooting with such finesse just moments earlier had vanished! He missed the 9ball so bad it was laughable, his face turned a bright red and all he could do was shrug with embarrassment .

I felt re-energized after that! after i won that game i proceeded to win the next 10 in a row and i noticed him get weaker and weaker as i mercilessly shot his liver out . By the time he threw in the towel, I was $1500 winner , but i have a feeling that he was more than just $1500 stuck because i heard later that he had action on the rail.

Those are great stories, Cannonball55 and inside_english.

This thread reminded me of something I saw in the late 90s at the Texas Open at G Cue Billiards. Jeremy Jones and Smokey Bartlett were playing and Jeremy was breaking really, really well and running out. For SEVERAL games, Smokey would scoop the last 3 or 4 balls. This is the Texas Open, fans every where... but my point is the guy that bought Smokey in the calcutta was NOT happy at what was going on.

Just an observation here, and I'm not making any judgments about anyone's playing ability on here, or their personal feelings in regards to whether or not balls should be conceded...but I have noticed that it appears, at least to me, that you usually find players who play from roughly B+ plus speed on up to be the ones who have little or no issues with conceding a ball or balls...but it tends to more regularly be the B- players and below who are very adamant about not conceding...

I wonder if this has anything to do with the confidence level of the player not shooting...he or she feels they would never, ever miss this ball and in turn assume the same about their opponent...with somewhat weaker players having essentially the opposite feeling...

Oh and for the record...I pretty much completely agree with "Fart Sniffers" earlier post and his breakdown...plus I just feel it's a sign of respect.

I've always heard that the best way to lose a backer ( besides dumping ) is from making a habit to concede balls ( regardless of shot difficulty ) The few times i ever backed a player i made sure to tell him that if he ever snoozes a ball ( no excuse for that either playing 1P) or if he ever concedes a game/balls he's lost me as a backer ... I'm out!
