Getting into a one-pocket frame of mind..

I noticed tonight that it takes me a few games to mentally warm up for one pocket. I know it sounds weird, but it feels like Im just going through the motions for the first game or two, but then my focus gets better, and I really feel like Im in the game. Other games, like 8 or 9 ball, I can rack em and play fine right away, so what gives? I think it has something to do with the lifetime of knowledge of banks, cuts, safties, and all the other shots that I dont have. I also have a really hard time getting into playing when Im playing people that wont play safe and go for every shot on the table. It makes it too easy and I lose interest. Its not that Im that good (cuz Im not), its just that they dont understand the defensive nature of the game, which is why I started playing it to begin with. Does anyone else have these problems? For the record, I am not very good, but I am trying to improve.

I understand what you're talking about man. When I first started playing one ho, I had to actually stop playing the other games.

I can now, play it without having to adjust to it. I recommend playing nothing but one ho.

Thats pretty much what I do now. I will play 9 ball with some people, but the whole time Im playing 9 ball, Im thinking about one pocket, lol.

Its easier to come out of the box in 8 ball or rotation games. They pretty much tell you what to do and you let your stroke out fairly quickly.

With one pocket there are often several safes before you really shoot at your hole. And by the time you do your not really ready LOL.

Mentally Id say you need to really focus on what you want to do with EVERY shot. Dont just try to put them on the proper side of the rack, but work to get the cueball on the rail or on the pack. The more you focus on the small details of the safety shots the better you will execute them and the offensive shots that follow.

At least that it what I feel I used to struggle with when I was playing. Id be kind of lazy at the start of the games and get myself into a hole that was hard to get out of.

This may sound funny but try playing more straight pool. There is no other game that forces you to perform after sitting for long terms like 14.1. 1P for me is the easiest of games to pick up after not playing it for a while. I just keep a few very simple rules in my head playing 1P and that seems to work for me.

good luck,

G.
