I know where this thread could head, so, I'll make it a simple question...

(little backround) - Played APA in 06-07 (2 sessions), have played ACS/BCA since. My son's fall sporting events will prohibit me playing on my normal Wednesday night team, which, btw, has 2 members that I played with all the way back to the APA days (switched because the 23 cap limit was going to split the team up). I believe I will be able to play with them again come Spring.

I have another buddy ask if I could play on his (APA) team this coming session. Since I do enjoy my night out playing pool, and Wed.'s are a no go, should I give it a shot, or join a different ACS team on another night, and avoid the drama I read on here??!

Play pool...... Forget "drama". Drama can be found in any league, tourney, etc. Don't let what you read here keep you from playing if you want to play and enjoy it. IMO - playing in different leagues, tournaments, formats, etc are good as they offer variety. Ya just don't see a bar selling one brand of booze. Go for it if you want to play.

How does your buddy describe the way things go in his league?

I would think that ought to give you plenty of info right there.

he likes it, but says there is a bunch of, "this guy is under-handicapped, or sandbagging", type complaining. Which doesn't really concern me, if they are bagging, I guess I'll just put a bigger whoopin on em ;)

All the local tourneys are guys I play in ACS....so, I don't really know any of the APA players. Something new, and really, like I said before, a reason to get out of the house one night a week.

one of the reasons I'm considering it is it's a 9ball league, and I've never played in one....

thanks for the reply

I played APA for 3 yrs and quit.........sure, the local APA Operator is mainly responsible for what happens with the local APA league but overall, there was just too much drama and sandbagging near the playoffs every session. And with three session per year, well, if you thought there was drama during the regular sessions, wait 'til the playoffs arrive. Handicap gripes flourish and most seem warranted based upon my observation of matches that I was present.

If you have other play options, but do ask you buddy to give it to your straight about playing APA, I'd go with the alternative to the drama associated with APA based upon my experience.

Peoria

Hello,

I heard the pool seen in Peoria, Il is very good. I play APA, but I am from NY. The few times that I went to Nationals in Vegas I remember the teams from Peoria, Il to be very competitive. Now that does not necessarily mean the league is run well, but I would give it a go.

APA in peoria....

I played in the Peoria 9Ball APA for one session and then ran for the hill's even tho we got 1st place

I wont get into details tho because the operators are very nice its just.....we'll....never-mind....

I would say join the team so you can play with your buddy and meet some new people. If you decide APA isn't for you, then just quit at the end of the season. You will never know if you don't join in the first place. Most of the issues people have concern sandbagging. It happens everywhere. Just play your best and whatever happens happens.

I think a lot of players think they are supposed to win every match and don't even give someone credit for having a good night. If they lose, it is automatically this guy is a sandbagger. Like they are trying to justify losing by making an excuse. I probably played 1k matches in the APA and can count on one hand the number of times I saw someone who I believe was legitimately sandbagging,

Does anyone know how this new scoring system is working out? (As far as holding down the sandbagging, etc.)

If your looking for a night out with friends and you just like to shoot pool, go for it. If the sandbagging is going to get to you, it's not worth the aggravation. Every league has sandbaggers and that will never change. You have to go in with the attitude of "it just doesn't matter".

Realize that APA 9-ball isn't exactly 9-ball as you know it....

I like it, but I wouldn't want you to commit to the team, then find out the differences, and wish you had known earlier.

good advice dub but.... apa 9 ball is closer to bca 8 ball than you think. they both are point based scoring systems, at the local level anyway.

If you are looking for some fun, and a night out, I would join. The only way drama is going to occurr is if you are drawn into the drama. Me, I've been playing for a long time, and refuse to get drawn into these situations. I go to have fun, not for confrontations or drama. No league is going to be perfect, so it's all how you handle things. Just don't bite when someone throws out the baited hook.

Hi Rob & Sean! Why not get with the regulars and Dave and feel out maybe starting a 1 pocket or Straight pool in house league through the Hall? May get a decent following? U like 1 pocket anyhoo so who knows.....AJ

A Give it ashot. I read about way more APA "drama" on here than I've experienced in person. I think some posters on here are just drama queens.

In APA, especially since you'll probably be the best player on the team, it's more about hanging out with folks than sharpening your own skills. It can also be gratifying mentoring players along.

I think like any league match in any league , the captains pretty much set the tone for the evenings.

ok, played APA 9ball last night for the first time ever....coming from ACS/BCA - oh my goodness is that a LONG night!! Watching a 2 vs. 3 matchup I thought I might pull out what little hair I have left. Other than missing a ball in hand shot (going for a breakout) I played OK. ;)

only complaint I heard last night was about me...

from one of the ladies on the other team, "MAN that's LOUD when he breaks!" haha

We'll see how this fall session goes, and then decide if it's worth playing in the spring (when I will definitely play ACS again - their state tourney is GREAT, and getting paid for performing well, just makes sense).

seemed like it was not too bad of a night for you.

yea watching a couple of 2's or a 2-3 matchup can be painful.

i captain a team and usually keep score when i aint playing, but when it gets too painfull to watch a match i let some one else keep score and i go visit other people or watch another match like 2-7' or something for a lil while.

now that is during regular session because i hardly ever give time outs then un less we need the wins to qualify for playoffs.

during playoffs i let some one keep score and i watch every match calling time out if i see a player starting to make a mistake.

oh yeah, timeouts....that happened last night and caught me off guard!!

One of the guys from the other team introduced himself, and asked what other nights I played league. I told him none, that I was only playing Mondays because my normal Wednesday night wasn't feasible this session. He asked my handicap on Wednesdays...lol. I told him last spring I was a 9.3. I don't think he knew there are non-APA leagues in the area. :p And I also think he found it weird that someone could play well and only play one night of league a week....

it's a little different, but I'll get to meet some new people, and hopefully have some fun.
