I've been playing pool, on and off, for over 45 years, but I have never had a custom cue maker fashion a cue for me. I once owned a Mike Capone cue, but I bought it from Mike already finished. Dan Janes once made a cue for me in return for a favor, but I only specified the weight and shaft size. So as I approached my 66th birthday, I thought maybe it's about time I had a cue made for myself. Not so I can play better, I am past that fantasy. Not to show off to the guys at the pool hall and not as an investment. I just wanted the experience of working with a cue maker, telling him just what I wanted, down to the veneers to use. I wanted to look over his stock of curly maple and cocobolo and pick out the pieces for my cue. I am lucky enough to live near a cue maker (Dick Neighbors), so I was able to go over to his shop and talk about what I wanted in a cue. The cue is in process as I write and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.

So here's the deal - if you have been thinking about having a cue maker build a cue for you, and you have a few spare bucks lying around, I encourage you to go for it! Life is to short to play with cheap cues!:D

i really like the photos on your website. Some of them i saved and about to go get big prints from staples right now and put up on my wall. haha

I've got my 40th birthday coming up, and I was thinking the exact same thing--getting my first custom.

Can you please, please talk to my wife and tell her it's not a stupid idea?

Sorry to say that big prints from those photos will look very blurry because the Smugmug files are pretty small. About 4 by 6 might look OK. We don't allow the original files to be downloaded.

Point out to your wife what people pay for a bass boat. Show her the prices of good digital SLR cameras. Heck, just pick a sport or hobby and chances are very good that the equipment involved is considerably higher than the price of a decent custom cue.

Well, I am approaching 40 next month, and I believe the perfect cue will arrive earlier than the perfect wife 8-)

Well, if the perfect wife tries to appear first, she better hurry up. The cue will probably be finished in november :D

Regards,

Detlev

We are no longer selling the DVD from the Website. We have updated the DVD to include virtually all of our photos on the Smugmug website and plan to offer it for sale again at the DCC in January. You make an interesting suggestion regarding descriptions of the images. I suppose we could take the captions from the imagaes on the Smugmug site and put them in a Word file to place on the DVD. Want to volunteer to do that for us? :D We'll give you a free DVD once you have finished the job!

Well, women appear to appreciate the value of a good kitchen more than that of their man's sporting equipment 8-)

Bill Porter is doing the Lord's Work!

To have a custom cue really adds beauty to this game. I'll never play with a production cue - not knowing what I know now. And as for price, there are Joss cues that are higher priced than one of John Madden's creations so the choice is easy. Go custom...

And the idea of plunking over 11 big bones for a Schon? I won't play with a Schon.

Every component of the custom cue is superior to the production cue. The choice of woods for raw material, the higher attention to detail, every variable related to quality is superior in the custom cue. Notwithstanding that the custom cue is a handmade creation of a custom builder for a specific customer (YOU), the custom cue also retains its value and often increases in value. The custom builder carefully selects each piece of wood for it's quality and how well it will go with the other pieces of wood in the butt. Hand selected. It's icing on the cake to mention that once you play with a custom, you won't want to go back. ;)

Lucky for Bill Porter to be so close in geographic proximity with Dick Neighbors - an all around great cue maker and a great guy who once served in the U.S. Navy! Can't go wrong with a Dick Neighbors cue!

One drawback to owning a beautiful custom cue is that you aren't comfortable going to pool halls with it. ;)

Hoping other pool players come to understand the added value of a custom cue...

Yours Truly,
The Woim

In the process as well , about half way thru maybe. Just layed out the designs for the ring work this weekend. Definitely nothing like holding a chunk of maple and/or ebony and imagining what it's going to look like once it's get's to be a cue. :)

I would also recommend it highly.
